After weeks of planning, the MG Motor team saddled up and took a ride to Goodwood for the inaugural Moving Motorshow and the hugely anticipated 2010 Festival of Speed.
Following the successful debut of MG6 at the MG enthusiasts favourite, MG Live, the Moving Motorshow was to be the first showing of the car to the public at large. Travelling south with the Sales & Marketing team were not one but three pre-production MG6’s demonstrating each of the highly specified trim levels that the MG6 Fastback will be available in at launch. Not to be left out, Britain’s best value sports car, the MG TF, insisted that it was not staying in Birmingham on its own so, whole gang in tow, we arrived in West Sussex and set about making our mark on the impressive new Moving Motorshow venue.
As well as the lucky fifty test drivers, we were delighted to offer 100’s of fans the chance to join us for the day and the MG team enjoyed meeting and greeting our guests and introducing them to the MG6 up close.
On Thursday morning, a stroke of luck enabled Mr Ian Giles to become the first member of the public to drive the new MG6. He was delighted having managed to snare the first run up the famous hill after last minute work commitments deprived the scheduled driver of his opportunity. Mr Giles began the trend for the day, praising the MG6 and, despite our promptings, stating that there was nothing the he could truthfully say that he disliked about the car!
Nine hours and fifty hill runs later, the MG6, ably supported by the ever willing TF, had ensured that not just the drivers but many additional passengers went away buzzing with enthusiasm and positive comments about their MG experience at Goodwood.
After such a fantastic day, we wondered whether the rest of the festival could possibly measure up and luckily, the answer was a resounding YES. With tens of thousands of car fanatics pouring through the gates each day to sample the festival in glorious July sunshine, MG was able to show off both the MG6 and the MG TF to first timers and existing fans alike. The new MG6 proved a roaring success with an overwhelmingly positive reaction. The pre-production MG6 created a real sense of excitement prior to the full UK specification car being seen later in the year and people just can’t seem to wait to get behind the wheel at their local dealer at the first available opportunity.
At seven o’clock on Sunday, the Festival of Speed closed its doors for another year. The MG team leaves Goodwood in fantastic spirits, happy to have been able to show off the MG6 to our old friends and, thanks to the huge interest generated by the car, many new ones.

New MG stuns the crowds at prestigious UK motor show

    • News from MG MOTOR UK Ltd - Page 6 Sendimage.php?path=8203.9259c5b1.jpg&mode=octagon&height=150&width=150

There was a huge buzz of excitement at the MG stand during the hugely successful Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Thousands of people got their first glimpse of the new MG6 – the first all-new MG in 15 years - and more than 40 lucky MG fans put prototypes of the new car through its paces in a demanding drive up the famous Goodwood hill climb.
Another 10 enthusiasts drove the TF sports car on the special three-mile course at Goodwood House in West Sussex as part of the Moving Motor Show, an exclusive driving day for invited guests introduced at the prestigious event for the first time this year.
Motoring writers from What Car?, Auto Express, MG Enthusiast and the Sunday Times also drove the three-mile hill route in the MG6. And the winner of an Autocar competition had his turn behind the wheel.
Almost 20,000 people attended the Moving Motor Show, boosting the overall festival attendance to a record-breaking 176,000. This was the 18th Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The MG6 sports fastback is powered by a 1.8-litre turbocharged engine and has been designed and engineered in Birmingham. It will be built by MG Motor UK Ltd at the MG Birmingham plant.
But it was the genuine interest of thousands of visitors that pleased the MG Sales and Marketing team. Marketing Manager, Peter Brooking, said: “We were frenetically busy during the four-day event and it was amazing to see how much attention the MG6 created.
“For people who knew about the new car it was the first time that most of them had seen it in the metal. We had lots of compliments about the design and styling and people were impressed with the quality, even though these were pre-production development cars.
“Potential customers who drove it up the hill were really impressed with the handling of the car and they all came back with a big smile on their faces!
“But there were also people who hadn’t heard about the car previously and they were just stunned to see it – some didn’t even know that MG was still going. We had lots of good wishes for the future of the brand and there was genuine affection towards MG.”
Almost 800 people expressed an interest in MG products and signed up to receive further information about the Birmingham-built cars.
But the MG6 didn’t have all the limelight – the iconic TF still proved a crowd-puller and many people were staggered at the price the car now sells at – £13, 799 on the road which is almost £6,000 less than it did in 2000.
MG Motor UK currently builds the MG TF sports car. It is sold through more than 40 MG dealerships across the UK. Full details and prices of the MG6 will be announced nearer the launch date.

    Hello!
My name is Michael Dell and I have recently joined MG Motor UK Limited in the Sales and Marketing Department. During the next year or so I am going to be writing a blog about what I’ve been getting up to here at the famous MG Birmingham plant and post regular updates on the MG Motor website!
My first day at MG Motor UK was the 12th April 2010. I spent the first half of the day meeting all the people around the plant which involved shaking a lot of peoples’ hands, a health and safety introduction, and an introduction to the Sales and Marketing Department where I was given my first project! I had to give a presentation about the Sales and Marketing Department to the senior managers. It was quite tough, but I managed it and everyone seemed to enjoy it!
Fast forward 3 months and I must say I’ve enjoyed every minute of it! I’ve been involved in many things across the Sales and Marketing Department including; working with Emma in Sales Operations, completing projects for Jack, and also working with Steve and Andy in Technical Services, who are working on the new MG6. I have also been attending various meetings which help to increase my knowledge and experience of how this company is run.
In June I attended MG Live where MG enthusiasts gather for a weekend at Silverstone to appreciate what’s best about MG. At the event I worked alongside my colleagues from Sales and Marketing and Engineering. The event was a big success for MG as a company as the new MG6, MG TF and images of the MG Zero were all received well by many critical, die-hard MG fans.
Within the months of July and August I will be visiting some MG dealerships across the country as well as some non-MG dealerships and comparing them. I will then be required to write a report and a presentation to managers and directors. I’m always learning and gaining a lot of experience whilst doing so! Over the next few weeks I’ll keep you up to date with what I’ve been getting up to!

    Road namers visit MG Birmingham

    16.07.10

We recently announced the chosen selections in the MG Birmingham Road Naming initiative. Having whittled down the hundreds of suggestions to five names that encapsulated the history of both the MG brand and the famous factory site, we invited the first people to suggest each name to Birmingham to see the new signs in place
and talk through the regeneration of the site as we prepare for production of the upcoming MG6 and the design and engineering teams continue to develop the next generation of MG vehicles. We met early at MG Birmingham and after a coffee and introductions we took a tour around the site to see the new road signs in situ.

News from MG MOTOR UK Ltd - Page 6 Sendimage.php?path=8220.fa887b9b.jpg&mode=original&height=600&width=800

Starting at the Headquarters, we revealed Issigonis Road, running alongside where the great man once had his office. The road from the main gate through past the design and engineering centres to the Headquarters is the aptly named Octagon Way, placing the iconic image of the brand right at the centre of the site.

News from MG MOTOR UK Ltd - Page 6 Sendimage.php?path=8220.df5c9002.jpg&mode=original&height=600&width=800

From this point we recognised more of the history of MG with the orbital road moving off to the right named after the original MG factory - Abingdon Avenue, and the arterial road through the middle between the Conference Centre and the main production building, Jamie Henderson's Morris Garages Drive. Around the other side of the site, crucially positioned by the rear gate, a further orbital road, joining up with Abingdon Avenue, is Ian Merriman's Austin Street.

News from MG MOTOR UK Ltd - Page 6 Sendimage.php?path=8220.88d0cc47.jpg&mode=original&height=600&width=800

Following the tour, Guy Jones, Sales & Marketing Director at MG Motor spent some time with our guests, showing them around the Technical Centre and, of course, presenting the new MG6 in the visitors centre allowing the opportunity to get up close to a pre-production example of our hotly anticipated new car in its highest trim level. The day was brought to a close as Guy presented each of the successful road namers with a copy of an exclusive print of the MG6, signed by the design team and tickets to join us at Goodwood for the Moving Motorshow. A number of the visitors were able to take us up on this offer and we were delighted to offer Chris O'Leary, who named Issigonis Road, the opportunity to take a run up the famous hill on the day. Once again MG Motor would like to thank the hundreds of MG fans who took part in this initiative and are delighted for those who made the chosen selections as their ideas are now a fundamental part of the fabric of MG Birmingham and will be a lasting testament to the brand and the history of the site for many, many years to come.

MG6 enters stage left at Expo Shanghai

An MG6 - the first new MG in 15 years - has a drive-on part in a play being performed in the UK Pavilion at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.
Members of the National Youth Theatre will perform an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night's Dream, called Living the Dream and the MG6 is part of the dream.
Before flying to China, members of the cast rehearsed scenes with an MG6, supplied by MG Motor UK, outside the newly-constructed Globe Theatre in London. The young actors used an early pre-production version of the sports fastback car which will be built at the MG Birmingham factory in Birmingham. Scenes shot on film in London are then integrated within the stage performance in Shanghai.
Living the Dream will be performed every day from July 19 to July 30 and the production is being sponsored by SAIC, the giant Chinese company which owns MG.
The MG6 is the official car of the UK Pavilion and SAIC is sponsoring the NYT productions.
Guy Jones, Sales and Marketing Director of MG Motor UK, said: “We are delighted that the MG6 and London scenes will feature in the play at Shanghai Expo which millions of people will visit.”

MG fans from Australia today completed an epic 13,000 mile trip half-way around the world and were flagged over the finish line at MG Motor UK’s factory in Birmingham.
It marked the completion of a four month adventure through 17 countries by members of the MG Gold Coast Club.
The cavalcade of classic MG cars was led by Dave Godwin driving a 1961 MGA. Five MGB GTs made up the party. After leaving Australia they started driving in China and on-route to the UK drove through Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Turkey, Greece, Albania, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland and France.
Dave said: “It’s been a great experience and the MGs received a brilliant reception everywhere we went. But coming through the gates of the MG factory in Birmingham was something really special.”
At MG Birmingham they were welcomed by crowds of employees. The guests had a guided tour of the SAIC Technical Centre, where 280 engineers and designers are working on a new generation of MG cars.
Outside of the company’s newly-opened £5 million European Design Centre, the Australian visitors saw pre-production versions of the MG6, the new MG sports fastback, and the latest MG TF sports car.
The MG6 will be the first all-new MG to be built in 15 years and work is under way now at the Birmingham factory gearing up for production.

This weekend sees another gathering of MG fans from around the country and further afield at the Motor Heritage Centre in Gaydon. Recently known as MG Fest, the event has been renamed MG Fifteen to celebrate the anniversary of the launch of the original MGF.
This year, the event is being principally sponsored by MG Motor authorised dealer – Jaybee of Banbury who will be in attendance to show off Britain’ s best value sports car – the MG TF. Jaybee will be showing the 135 with the 2010 style pack featuring redesigned mirrors, leather seats, special interior finishing and the stylish ‘Twist of Pepper’ alloy wheels made famous by last years 85th Anniversary edition. Jaybee will be delighted to meet MG fans at the event and provide details on the cars and, who knows, if the rumours are true, they might even have a little surprise up their sleeve! OK, we know the suspense would be too much – MG Motor have agreed to provide Jaybee with the opportunity to be the first dealer to show a prototype MG6 on their stand in what will be only the 3rd public showing of the car in the UK.
Jaybee’s Marketing Manager, Colin Corne said “We had a fantastic time working with MG Motor at the recent MG Live event at Silverstone and were delighted to take advantage of the opportunity to work with the MG Car Club on the MG Fifteen event. We always love to meet the MG fans and with the TF representing such great value for money and the MG6 just around the corner, it is important that whilst we celebrate past MG vehicles, we give everyone the chance to see the exciting future that will ensure we can all come back in 2025 to celebrate the 30th anniversary!’
Supporting Jaybee from the MG Motor family will be Sterling Automotive, focusing on many of their other unique service offerings, Sterling can be found in the Traders section where they will be demonstrating some of the innovative ways in which they continue to support legacy MG product.
Also in attendance will be SMTC’s Ian Pogson – he will be bringing the 1.5 millionth MG, a gold TF produced to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. Ian will also be giving a talk on his long history working with the brand and in particular his extensive contribution leading the development of the MG TF 85th Anniversary edition.

Engineers at MG Birmingham have come to the rescue of a rescue hovercraft!
After 10 years of faithful service and many life-saving rescues, the engine in Burnham-on-Sea’s Spirit of Lelaina search and rescue hovercraft was beginning to feel the strain.
Luckily the Somerset resort is a favourite holiday spot of Neil Butler, a Chief Engineer based at the SAIC Technical Centre at MG Birmingham. SAIC is the parent company of MG Motor UK.
Hovercrafts are used instead of boats by the rescue team because of the treacherous mud and sands along this part of the coast, which sadly claimed the life of a little girl in 2002.
Neil said: “I happened to be on the beach one day and saw that the hovercraft’s engine was really struggling. I knew that one of our new engines from MG TFs built in Birmingham would not just fit in the craft but do a much better job.”
A new MG 135hp engine has been donated which will give the hovercraft a 40 knot capability and cut down the time it takes to get to people in peril.
Neil put in many hours of his own time to work on the engine to adapt it to salt water conditions.
Mark Newman, Chairman of Burnham-on-Sea’s hovercraft rescue charity, BARB, said: “The new MG engine will be crucial to our work in saving lives and we are extremely grateful to Neil and everyone at MG and the Technical Centre who have been so generous and helpful.”
The new MG engine will be presented to the charity by Neil and Richard Moore, Executive Director of SAIC UK Technical Centre, on August 15 during BARB’s annual Rescue Sunday when more than 3,000 people will pack the beach to watch rescue demonstrations.

Most MG owners don't use Facebook!
I don't expect Twitter is very popular either.

They would do better posting here Idea

Bill Wallis – MG Car Club President 1923 - 2010
    24.08.10

Everyone at MG Motor UK was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Bill Wallis, President of the MG Car Club, a true gentleman and an enthusiast of all things MG.

Bill was held in high esteem by everyone who knew him. He had a deep knowledge of the MG brand, which he eagerly shared with fellow MG fans, but it was Bill’s warmth and charm that earned him not just respect but great affection.

For MG Motor UK, Bill was a true friend and supporter. At events, such as this year’s MGLive! just a few months ago he was keen to learn about our latest plans and always wished us well. Bill was always eager to learn more about the MG of the future, although his roots in the MG brand went back many years.

We will miss Bill as a true friend and ambassador for MG and our thoughts are with his wife June, daughter Louise and his family and many friends who will have been deeply touched by his passing.

Chairman of the MG Car Club, John Day, has written a tribute to Bill which has been published on the mgcc website and can be viewed by clicking here.

New MG to star at MPH featuring Top Gear Live events
    31.08.10

The first all-new MG in 15 years will be the star at two of the biggest motor shows in Britain this autumn when the UK specification MG6 is unveiled at the MPH featuring Top Gear Live events in November.

MG6 is a 1.8-litre five-door fastback designed and engineered in the UK and which will be built at MG’s factory in Birmingham.

MG6 development vehicles in left-hand drive format have been shown at two major events earlier in 2010; however MPH will be the first time that full UK right-hand drive production specification MG6’s have been displayed to the public.

Peter Brooking, MG Motor UK’s Marketing Manager, said: “MPH featuring Top Gear Live crowds are always knowledgeable and enthusiastic so we think the new MG6 will prove very popular with visitors to the shows.

“MG6 is not just the first all-new MG model for several years but it’s a true MG with all the hallmarks which have made the brand so popular throughout its long history. It’s a striking, high quality car that is also practical and sporty”

This years MPH featuring Top Gear Live events take place at London’s Earls Court from November 4-7 and the NEC Birmingham from November 11-14.

    MG investing in the future
    02.09.10

MG Motor UK has launched an apprenticeship scheme as it invests in people for the future.

The Birmingham-based car maker has already invested millions of pounds in hardware as it gears up for production of the MG6 – the first all-new MG in 15 years.

Investing in people is seen as just as important by the company as it begins planning for a range of new models over the next decade. The company has therefore launched an apprenticeship scheme and is expanding its training programmes.

HR Manager, Louise Lane, said: “Apprenticeships are the lifeblood of the future of a company and we are really pleased to have recently launched a new programme.”

Michael Dell, 18, from Oldbury in Birmingham, is the first new apprentice at MG Motor. He works in the Sales & Marketing office and is also studying for a NVQ in Business and Administration on day release at Bournville College, Birmingham.

He said: “I was thrilled to be selected to be MG’s first new apprentice and am really enjoying my work. It’s my dream job; it’s so exciting to be working on the launch of an all new MG.”

    09.09.10

Here we are on Thursday and the weekend is already on the horizon. Fresh from star turns in Derby and Eastbourne, MG6 heads South again this week to put in a guest appearance at our dealer Perkins of Rayne.

The pre-production MG6 is really clocking up the miles and this should be a very special event.

Perkins have enjoyed representing MG over a number of years and have built up great customer relationsips. They have invited over 500 MG owners to take the opportunity to enjoy an advanced preview of the car.

Perkins MG Brand Manager Phil Bunyard said ‘It is rare for manufacturers to allow pre-production prototypes out of the gates and especially into dealers so we felt that we had to take this unique opportunity to give some of our really loyal MG drivers the chance to see the car first hand’.

If you are in the area and want to see the car CLICK HERE for details of how to reach Perkins – the MG6 will be on show from Friday 10th September until Monday 13th.

    09.09.10

Team RLR head into the final round of the 2010 Le Mans Series at the Autosport 1000km of Silverstone looking to underline its credentials as a contender in the LMP2 class.

The Lancashire-based outfit achieved its objective of finishing the squad's debut race at the Hungaroring last month - guiding MG Lola EX265 to eighth from 17 LMP2 starters and 18th overall from 37 in a demanding night race.

Now among the 47 entries heading for the home of British motor racing this weekend, Team RLR is looking forward to testing its mettle against the big guns of endurance racing again.

Team RLR is based in Bolton, Lancashire and is an all-British squad led by team principal Nick Reynolds. Team RLR's drivers include Barry Gates (2009 SPEED endurance racing Euro series winner) and Rob Garofall (2009 SPEED endurance racing UK series winner).

Team RLR's long-term goal is to compete for honours in the Le Mans 24 Hours and bring through new British sportscar racing talent as the squad develops its presence in the Le Mans Series over the course of the next three seasons.

MG Motor UK’s parent company, SAIC, has won a major award for investing in Britain.
The coveted Chinese Investor of the Year award is in recognition of the multi-million pound investment SAIC has made at MG Birmingham where 400 people are employed designing, engineering and building cars.
HRH Prince Andrew presented the award to SAIC Motor’s Executive Director of Strategic Planning, Mr Chen Jinlei, at a VIP gala dinner in Shanghai to mark the British Business Award 2010 winners.
The award acknowledges that SAIC can “best demonstrate strong growth, innovative strategies and market leadership” in establishing a business in the UK.
Recently a new MG Global Design Centre was opened on the Birmingham site, which also houses the huge SAIC UK Technical Centre. This development phase at MG Birmingham, including new engine testing facilities now being built, amounts to more than £5-million.
These two centres of excellence are designing and engineering a range of new MG models which will be launched in China and the UK. The British team also design Roewe models which are only on sale in China.
Further investment is being made in the manufacturing area of MG Motor UK where the new MG6 – the first all-new MG to be launched in Britain in15 years – will be built. Total capital investment by SAIC at the MG Birmingham site amounts to £45-million.
William Wang, Managing Director of MG Motor UK, said: “This important award shows how committed SAIC is to the future of our Birmingham operation.
“A very substantial investment has been made here and the award is also a reflection on all the hard work that everyone here has made. We will build on our success and we are looking forward to a range of MG cars being made here in the future.”
SAIC is the biggest automotive company in China where it sold 2.72 million vehicles in 2009. China has now become the largest car market in the world where a total of more than 13.6-million cars were sold last year compared with 2-million in Britain.
The Shanghai Expo 2010 Chinese Investor of the Year Award is jointly sponsored by UK Trade & Investment and the UK Pavilion at Shanghai World Expo 2010.

News from MG MOTOR UK Ltd - Page 6 Empty Intelligent Design Saves Copper in MGs

Intelligent Design Saves Copper in MGs

    29.10.10

    • News from MG MOTOR UK Ltd - Page 6 Sendimage.php?path=8251.8a4f8b03.jpg&mode=octagon&height=150&width=150

Valuable copper is being stripped out of cars in an ‘intelligent design’ system being pioneered by engineers at MG Birmingham.
It makes electrical systems more efficient, reliable and can save hundreds of tons of expensive copper during the build process of cars.
The new system is being used on the new MG6 sports fastback which will be built at MG Motor UK’s factory and goes on sale next year. All future MG models will also benefit from the same advanced process.
MG is owned by SAIC of China; one of the biggest car firms in the world, and its European technical centre, SMTC UK Technical Centre is based at the Birmingham site.
Engineers at SMTC Technical Centre have developed sophisticated design tools that can precisely calculate the exact amount of copper needed in a complicated electrical harness within a car.
So no valuable copper is wasted. It saves on the cars weight and therefore helps reduce carbon emissions. Alongside the software the electrical engineers have designed a unique skeletal ‘lab car’ in which every new system can be tested, reducing hours of validation work over traditional methods of proving electrical layouts.
But the ‘intelligent system’ does even more! Richard McAlister, Director of Electrical Engineering at SMTC, explained: “It vastly improves our ‘right first time’ targets in developing even the most complex electrical systems.
“The in-house software tools we’ve developed means we can work out the exact diameter of each piece of wiring, the exact length and the best route of each wire throughout the car.
“We can test each part of the system on screen so everything is in virtual form. But with the lab car we can do more again by using the wiring and components and develop systems for production without needing to make very expensive pre-production tooling.
“The whole intelligent system saves time; is much more efficient and saves costs from an engineering point of view. And for our customers there are many benefits including having a car with a much more robust and reliable electrical system.”
Engineers at the SMTC centre at MG Birmingham also work on Roewe cars which are sold in China. The same ‘intelligent design’ is being used on Roewe models.
