SAIC's Roewe and MG brands two eye-catching performance in the first quarter of this year, for a total sales reached 51,421 units, up 29.74 percent; among Roewe brand promotion 25.7%, MG brand is up 38.1%. Furthermore Roewe and MG brand a quarterly growth rate, it is much higher than the industry average. "This year, two brand Roewe and MG plans to complete 240,000 sales target, judging from the already existing does not become a problem." Passenger car company SAIC Roewe brand Tao, director of market operations to Netcom Society, said: "For the next year Roewe / MG will launch three new models to further improve our product lineup in order to achieve the two brands more rapid development. "

In May this year, the Roewe brand released a new 550 models listed after its product lineup and increasingly perfect tightness, involving A-Class 350, A + sedan new 550, B 750 and B + Class sedan 950 series models. MG models are a bit simple, just MG3, MG5, MG6 and MG7 four models. Tao said: Roewe and MG future product line will continue to enrich, next year put the launch Roewe 350 1.5T version, in addition to the MG brand will also launch a MG5 sedan version (internal code AP13) and MG CS (internal code AS21) Both models, allowing two brand Roewe and MG products and sales ratio is also more reasonable.

Earlier in 2010, SAIC has signed an agreement with GM on the two sides to jointly develop lightweight design 1.0L-1.5L direct injection, turbocharged engine series. And next year will launch the new 350, MG5 sedan and MG CS three models will be equipped with this 1.5T engine. The engine will be in the future application of a variety of models, but not with this engine is matched with independent intellectual property rights of SAIC DCT dual-clutch gearbox, and will be expected to provide a six-speed manual transmission available to consumers selection.

Accordance with the previously announced strategic plan, SAIC passenger cars in 2015 will form a completely separate branch of vehicle research and development system, and strive to become a leader in its own brand. In addition to the formation of SAIC's strong R & D strength. In the foundation has invested 23 billion yuan, the Shanghai Automotive in the "Twelfth Five-Year" period will invest 22 billion yuan for its own brand Roewe and MG R & D, manufacturing, making the future will have more SAIC own brand product launch .

"At present, our platform is contracting, the platform before too much", Shanghai Automotive Group Co., Ltd. Passenger Vehicle Company Technology Center Executive Director Dr. Zhang Cheng in an interview with China Netcom community made above statements. "Concrete doing, we have 7 platform and I think our platform too much, I think we should shrink in the future, should be mainly five big platform." This means that SAIC will follow the general pattern of passenger vehicles, the brand's platform reduced.

Currently, SAIC has a total of seven passenger platform-independent, two non-independent platforms are supported SAIC's Roewe and MG dual brand all models, including electric cars, sedans and SUV (area) models.

Technology sector plans in accordance with SAIC, SAIC passenger car platform will be integrated later before 7 +2 reduced to five, the same platform that five of its support from all the brand's models. "In the next five years, SAIC will be launched 13 models of passenger cars." Dr. Zhang Cheng. It should be noted that, after integration SAIC passenger will not set up a special platform for the SUV, SUV and sedan will use the same platform. Some analysts believe that the urban SUV will be possible to use A +, B-platform, and are likely to integrate into professional SUV B-class car platform.

Two years ago, GM announced that will substantially reduce the number of engine models and platforms, the global number of platforms in 2010 from 30 down to 14 in 2018, the number of engine models will be reduced from 20 to 12 or less. General The aim is to cut costs, the plan will save about $ 1 billion annually, and will save time for the development of new platforms, making them less time to launch a new car.

Announced to shrink the front is not the only international brand, a number of brands also have this move. Released in March 2009 after a multi-brand strategy, has been formed Chery Chery (including Cowin), Karry, Riich and Rely four brand architecture system. Chery Automobile few years ago experienced a "big Chery" brand of development, not only does not change its "low positioning, price competition" image, improve product premium capacity, but because of the complex structure of the brand so that consumers generate confusion, sales of high-end products that appear dismal phenomenon.

Chery had to re-adjust the development of ideas, sadly announced narrow front. Thereafter, Chery in product development also highlights the focus of a number of research projects to give up from the previous year more than 130 R & D projects, and substantial reductions to more than 30. Besides Geely, Changan and other brands also had to adjust their strategies, have to start a "subtraction", narrowing his front.

"We do not pursue large, but we will pursue in the local area best," Dr. Zhang Cheng said in an interview to the editorial Netcom expressed. Some things, which is the future of technology sector SAIC passenger ideas. Platform contraction trend SAIC passenger cars from the objective to provide a more adequate energy to research new technologies. Earlier listing of the new Roewe 550 TST equipped with dual-clutch automatic transmission oil cooler is SAIC passenger breakthroughs in technology a vivid example.

What are SAIC Motor's seven current platforms?

    An attempt:

    950

    750

    MG7

    550/MG6

    350/MG5

    MG3

    Roewe E50

Rationalising MG7 with 750 will happen. But then what? 950 with 7/750? MG6 with MG7?

I think they have already counted MG7 and 750 as one platform, the Rover 75 platform, the 750 being a little longer and the MG7L a little longer again.

The seventh must be the W5 which is an odd one as it actually has a chassis with body attached - outdated.

I don't understand why the E50 didn't share the ZP platform with the MG3, maybe they will be merged.  We know that they want to replace the GM parts of the 950 with their own so that will probably merge with the new MG7/750 platform.

If they want a really large car how about the Maxus MPV platform, or is that too wide?

Yes, I forgot about the W5!

So will the CS use an existing platform, or be shared in future with another model?

The CS has code name AS21, I guess that means it is a variation of the AP platform used by the 350 and MG5.

It clearly has a different suspension though and it's body is a different shape so I'm not quite sure what "platform" actually means?...
