SAIC announce new base in Shanghai Jiading

    New Jiading Base Ss110

The Shanghai New Energy Automobile company, created at the end of last year, has announced the location of it's new factory to be a 9.5 square kilometer area in the Jiading district of Shanghai. The Jiading district will vigorously promote the construction of the base and will provide support in the form of taxation benefits, government procurement of the product and will actively formulate a number of other supportive policies including a special fund of 1 billion yuan to support the development of its new energy automotive industry. For 2012 government procurement of public transport, commuter, postal services, sanitation etc will consist of at least 30% new energy vehicles.

It is expected that by 2010, the SAIC base will have an annual production of 10,000 new energy vehicles, by 2012 100,000 and by 2015 the base will be producing 300,000 new energy vehicles per year consisting of a mixture of hybrid and pure electric passenger cars. Shanghai Automotive Group is one of the leading automobile industry companies for the development of new energy sources.

Although SAIC will be the leading enterprise at the base, a number of other companies will also be located there including the Shanghai Electric Motor company and other related enterprises.

Interesting. Toyota announced production of a hybrid at Burnaston yesterday, and today we hear that Nissan will make batteries in Washington.

If New Energy could do something in a corner of Longbridge it would create green-sounding PR far in excess of the effort made!

    Toyota:
"Toyota's announcement coincided with a visit by business secretary Lord Mandelson, who said:

'This is a welcome and forward-looking investment in Britain from a world class manufacturer. As part of our low carbon industrial strategy we set out to make Britain the best place in the world to develop low carbon vehicles. These commitments, backed by the formidable skills of the UK automotive workers enable companies like Toyota to invest with confidence in low carbon car production in the UK. It demonstrates that the UK's car industry is already making the low carbon transition.' "

    Nissan:
"Lord Mandelson, the business secretary, is planning to visit the North East plant and outline his vision of creating a “green revolution in the region” which will include a research and development centre and technology park."

Lord Mandelson At Toyota Motor Manufacturing - empty hands?

    - I don't see Lord Mandelson commiting to 30% of UK government vehicles being "Green" yet, and a "corner of Longbridge" dosn't sound like quite the same scale as 9.5 Km square, but a speech is a good start...

It is reported that the hybrid and pure electric MG-Roewe vehicles will use lithium batteries packs from China's BYD Auto with SAIC being their first domestic automobile customer. BYD is one of the worlds leading rechargable battery producers (2nd largest?) and also produces hybrid cars.
