To the Global automotive market: KIV Motors Algeria introduces MG

The new Morris Garages showroom in Ben ’Aknoûn, Algeria GM-Morris-Garages-algeria-th

Eurl KIV (Khodja Importing Vehicles), distributor of manufacturer Foton Motor, has to market the famous British brand MG - Morris Garages - formerly known as MG Rover before its bankruptcy in April 2005 and bought by the Chinese Nanjing Automobile Company (NAC) in July of that year which will sell in 2007 the Chinese group Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), after the merger of the two groups.

The famous British brand, which then is reborn from its ashes, is now available in our market in recent days, visible in a beautiful showroom in Ben Aknoun on the road to El-Biar (Alger) - opposite the Embassy Canada - with a great facade, but also a large poster above who proudly displays the MG brand with the British emblem.

Inside the showroom, there are four models of the MG brand, ranging from the MG3, a compact, the MG7, a road with a V6 under the hood. KIV Motors, which contains its head office in Annaba, led by Ahcène Khodja, the sole shareholder in the capital of the company, aims to effectively represent MG among major brands.

From a design that is reminiscent of the old Rover, MG, owned by Chinese, not only has kept the spirit of the brand, but also the production site based in Longbridge in Britain - the historic Rover - the relaunch of Europe and of course a site in China for assembly of vehicles intended for the local market.

Thus, for the Algerian market, it was announced that some models come from the British historical site while others arrive right of China in a factory that designs and assembles the vehicles according to European standards.

Moreover, the mechanical maintenance workshop and after-sales spare parts store will open soon in Dar El-Beida.

Models proposed by MG Motors KIV:

I think it might be marketing speak. They don't have the TF listed so none of those cars are likely to be coming from Birmingham, unless Birmingham is building LHD MG6s before it has started producing RHD ones!

Feriel Hamdi from Algeria just posted an up-to-date photo on Facebook showing two MG750s, two MG3s and the same large poster of the MG6. The Rover badge is still there.

    For Facebook users:

Feriel says they sell about three a month of each of MG6 and MG750, and that the MG3 has just launched.

Nice picture, I wonder if they actually sell MG3s with flags on, or are they just the demonstrators?

One of their bedrooms must be lit in red white and blue, and another in bright orange!

Company director Cherif Brouri has posted links to news reports on Facebook saying that they are opening new new MG showrooms at Annaba, Constantine and Oran (the town for which philosopher Albert Camus played in goal).

He has also had the roof of a grey MG3 decorated with the Union Flag.

Very similar styling to the UAE dealers, but the MG6 and MG3 may not be sold in the UAE, although an ex-pat Brit was keen to purchase the MG6 they had for evaluation.

The MG badged Roewe models are very nice but not true to the MG theme, more akin to the older Rover idea, and as for the MG badges, argh! Could they not have done a better job of fitting MG badges to these Roewe models than what I saw? I really think the MG350/550/750 will do well in these markets as they compete much better with the average choice of Far Eastern selection in terms of quality and fit/finish. Not sure about Algeria, but certainly in the Middle East Toyota outsell most other makes, and the standard of the MG models in beige finsih with walnut is better, and looks better, too.

I imagine that MG stand as much of a chance of reaching Toyota sales levels in the IIRC 25 countries where they sell the rebadged Roewes, as the MG6 has of outselling the Focus in the UK.

In these countries, MG must be a niche player. It's so interesting how very important it is to the Algerians that MG has British heritage.

If you think the MG badge looks sellotaped into a Roewe shield, you should have seen the Mk1 550!

(I think this is the Brazilian model...)

Didn't mean to suggest that the MGs will outsell Toyota, but I think they provide a cheaper alternative to the Toyota. Whether they will have the reliability of the Toyota is open to debate and the Toyotas are priced at a premium because of its reputation in that regard. But I do feel these markets are more inclined to find the MG a good alternative choice where they don't have the UK's desire for German interiors.

I know there's a lot of debate by British computer users about what the MG6's competitors are. I think the wonga-wielding punters are thinking about alternatives that keyboard fans and e-enemies of MG cannot countenance - used cars, SAABs, Audis, Škodas, Mazdas, Hyundais... I wonder what the alternatives are in Algeria?

I think the British heritage is really important - interesting, given the war for Algerian independence - maybe Monty liberated the country from the Germans during the war...

Looking at that dash I do like the beige, plus the 21st Century electronics that go well with the central screen. Ironically the black and beige is probably more Teutonic than just the plain black! I think that MG in the UK haven't really improved the 6's dash, in fact they have made it worse by trying to retro style the instruments into what was meant to be a digital dash. Just my thoughts. Agreed on your other comments!

MG UK didn't change the MG6 instrument pack it is virtually the same as a Chinese MG6. Only Roewe 550 and the exported Roewe 550's with the MG badges crudely applied have the digital instrument pack.

As for the MG3's competitors in Algeria, company director Cherif Brouri posted on Facebook:

MG3 is new, so unknown in the market, we will fight against fiesta, Polo, 207, yaris hatch,.....etc
