Core MG3s likely to cost from £10,000 to £12,500
Three trims, 10 colours and lots of personalisation
    On sale from October

MG will offer three trims, but the sub-£10,000 entry-level model will come with a very limited equipment roster.

Performance and price details are being kept strictly under wraps until the car is launched in September but it will include DAB radio, hill start assist and easy to operate air conditioning.

Cars are currently made at the vast factory in Lanjing, China – largely equipped with machinery from the old MG Rover plant – and UK vehicles are transported by container for reassembly and testing at Longbridge.

DAB - they have listened to Patpending Very Happy

Lanjing - maybe they thought nobody would know the difference, it is of course Lingang Rolling Eyes Although the MG Rover robots are at Nanjing, maybe that is what they meant, but they build 350s not MG3s or MG6s.

"reassembly" implies that they are assembled twice, that would be stupid Evil or Very Mad

The second quote does say launched in September which is late summer, just not on sale until Oct.

I see that if you want an MG3, the procedure is not to go to your dealer or to arrange a test drive via your local dealer, instead it is done direct with MG Motor:

Be one of the first in the queue to get your very own personalised MG3!
You can now pre-order your MG3 by placing a fully refundable £100 deposit on your desired car.
Fill out the form below and our onsite MG Sales Centre will contact you shortly to take your deposit over the phone.

Tightly controlling this at first obviously. It also means that when they approach a new dealer they can open an existing order book as a sweetner?

In other news they have already corrected the typo I spotted earlier! There's still the small matter of 'oramge' in the colour chart, but it shows they're checking and trying to get things right. Finally...

CCT's take - they need some convincing!

    http://www.chinacartimes.com/2013/06/just-for-fun-mg3-launched-in-the-uk/

First impressions of the MG3 are good, but in no respect is the car cutting edge in the immensely competitive Supermini section.  The styling is trying to be youthful and trendy, but at the same time it is saddled with a practical, yet boxy bodyshell.  This could be considered a USP, but it doesn’t feel it.  The biggest issue that will hinder the cars sales success is the miniscule dealer network.  Plans are said to be afford that will see this increased to a much need 100 over the next two years.  Indeed at this very event, national dealer groups were being courted into taking on MG franchises.

MG refused to answer any further questions relating to the sales and marketing budget for the car, other than to say there wouldn’t be a TV advertising campaign for it. They did admit however, that they’ve been holding off marketing spend until the MG3 is launched to the public.

That could be something to do with being banned from more friendly ones Wink

The engine is the new (to us Brits) 1.5 16 valve unit feature variable valve timing on the inlet values.  Such an engine is large for its class and anticipated demographic although the car won’t be over powered with just 105ps available.

The exhaust "values" also have variable cam timing.

At least he didn't complain about spelling and grammar errors on their website Laughing

Oh! I was surprised when Ash used an anti-MG term earlier this year - that might explain it...

Actually, that quote about "no TV advertising" has been picked up and repeated and was credible to me because it was on CCT. Has their objectivity been compromised?

Mr Ash CCT does visit the UK occasionally but obviously not for every MG event.  I'm sure the quotes will be accurate even if the reporter does see things on the glass 95% empty side from time to time!

Of course there is still plenty of time to change their mind on advertising but the sales probably need to show some potential before they commit to a large advertising spend.

I'm not sure that their target audience for the MG3 often watches Coronation Street anyway, is TV advertising really the best way these days?

Plus this is good: "The single engine is a 104bhp 1.5-litre petrol motor: MG admits it is on the large side for the supermini sector but is hard at work in its on-site engine calibration lab to optimise economy and emissions. “We can tune it for torquey drivability which will give us more flexibility on CO2,” an MG engine guru told us.
He admitted the 135hp turbo version of the engine would fit but said there are currently no plans to do so. “But we could look at it if the market demanded,” he teased. A three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol turbo, jointly developed with GM, will also arrive later. There are no plans for a diesel."
Well frankly I think all the forums are 'demanding' that 135hp engine! Get to it!

    Yes, the forums.

They also demand 20" wheels, 48 spoilers, 33g CO2 and a price of £5,000... but I want more oomph myself. I wonder where MGUK get their market data?

    ha!

There is a serious point though - economies of scale or not, the buying public like choice. Every review for the car will include the phrase "only one engine option" and that is a negative, however good that engine might be. Both the MG3 and MG6 seem to try and offer as much as they can without committing to the sporty image. Its sporty but very versatile with 5 doors and a huge boot, it's got a very flexible engine that combines economy and (modest) performance etc. It's a laudable middle road, but MG should maybe be one thing or the other.

For instance the ZR range was a 105 to a 160, and that's what's driving the demand for options; it's not just what the market seems to want, but it's also what MG drivers are used to.
