New Roewe 550 to be based on the MG 6

MG6 derived Roewe 550 scheduled for production

Recently SAIC officially registered three new cars for production, the codes were connected with the new Roewe 950 derived from the Ssangyong Chairman however one reporter, following a visit to the SAIC Lingang production base has reported that one of the codes is in fact for an MG 6 derived Roewe 550.

If anyone is now wondering why you would derive an R550 from an MG6, well the MG6 is a hatchback and Roewe has no hatchback anywhere in their range, the new 550 will be a hatchback. It does make you wonder just how different the MG6 hatchback is to the R550 saloon...

Shanghai, March 17 (Gasgoo.com) SAIC plans to roll out three in-house developed new models in the next two years, ChangJiang Times reported, citing sources from SAIC's Roewe manufacturing base located in Linggang, an industrial town in Shanghai.

One of the three new own-brand models -- hatchback Roewe 550, derived from the MG 6-series, will fill in the hatchback blank of Roewe cars. Another two will be high-end models, which are believed more premium than Roewe 750, sources said.

The report says SAIC's three new models, code-named CSA7280, CSA7360, CSA6470, are included in the list of new vehicle models registered by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Sources said CSA7280 is actually the Ssangyong New Chairman's Roewe version, CSA7360 represents Kyron's Roewe edition and CSA7360 is hatchback Roewe 550.

Haven't we got a derivative circle going on here..isn't the MG6 is derived from the R550...and in the second one a hatchback R550 is derived from the MG6...are we into the chicken and the egg here? Or have I got me model numbers in a muddle?

Yes, you are correct, and I'm not sure the report is correct since rumours of a 550 hatch have been around for as long as rumors of the MG6.

I guess the hatch has been styled to be an British MG and a Roewe copy made of it, whereas the saloon is a Chinese Roewe with an MG copy.

They will both be built on the same production line anyway
