Does any Maxus design work take place at Longbridge or is it a totally separate business? It would be nice to think of it all coming slowly back together at some point!

Maxus, MG and Roewe are the 3 active brands that belong 100% to SAIC. Maxus is part of a separate commercial vehicle subsidiary from MG and Roewe but design work for the three is carried out by the SAIC Motor Technical Centre SMTC which is another separate subsidiary. I assume that SMTC and it's boss Tony Williams are responsible for this vehicle although the sketches above do have the label "Torino Design" which is an Anglo-Italian company. SMTC do work at Longbridge and in China. The V80 has certainly had work done on it in the UK, it went to MIRA for the School Bus roll over testing.

I was looking at the SMTC website yesterday - very good it is too - but there was no mention of Maxus on there so I wondered if commercial vehicles were a wholly different thing.

What about SSanyong - isn't that 100% SAIC?

Maxus is known as "LDV" in some markets IIRC. Don't know if that makes a difference.

SAIC sold troublesome Ssangyong but [EDIT I believe] they still own the relevant IP...

SsangYong is nothing to do with SAIC these days, they have Indian owners now but I think they do all their work in S. Korea.

The commercial side does have different managers so is somewhat independent and is based in Wuxi near Nanjing so again somewhat independent but they are the same group and will share facilities. At the show they will be with SAIC's other commercial vehicles not on the Roewe/MG stand but they do sell their UK heritage, very useful when selling school busses as safety of the children is very important in China - UK design will help sales.

The S. Korean unions more or less killed it after many months of strikes and riot police and SAIC gave up on them and refused to invest any more. The S. Korean government saved it from bankruptcy and sold/gave it to the Indians who did promise to invest.

We don't know what SsangYong IP SAIC owns or has access to but I suspect they kept rights to use what they paid for.

By late afternoon, the situation was in a lull and the strikers had ceased firing at police, the police official said. Police had earlier closed in on the paint shop but did not enter it. Union spokesman Lee Chang-kun said a police assault on the paint shop would be deadly. “We will respond to it, bracing ourselves for death.”

Almost 100 people have been injured this week at the plant in Pyeongtaek, 70 km (43 miles) south of Seoul. Strikers have battled riot police with giant catapults, firebombs and steel pipes while police fought back with tear gas.

In dramatic scenes Wednesday, police commandos rappelled from helicopters onto the roof of the paint shop, the last building still held by the strikers.

Other officers inside three containers lifted by giant cranes landed on a nearby roof Wednesday while two helicopters dropped liquefied tear gas on protesters.

yes, I used to travel to and from Frankfurt airport every week in minibuses like this but they didn't look as good. They have to be tough to cover a thousand miles every week - the Renaults were not as good as the Mercs...

I'm unconvinced about that, apart from them looking substantially different I can't find any source that appears to have a link to the factory and the more reliable reports have omitted that bit of info so it may be just rumour.

Now it's been given a Mitsubishi engine, with nearly three times the power of the LDV school bus parked just down the road from here even though it's a smaller vehicle!

Looks rather watered down from the blue motor show example, especially the frontal treatment and wheels etc. It did look quite striking. Now it looks like, um, a van.

No, the V80 is much bigger,

Length 5700 (4950mm for short wheelbase)
    Width 1998
    Height 2345.
    Gross Laden Mass 3490
    Licencing Mass, 2400.

    instead of

    Length 5168
    width 1980
    height 1928
The total mass (kg) About 2800
    Curb weight (kg) About 2150

well, maybe not "much" bigger but still bigger, guess the main difference is that the V80 is a load carrier (which may consist of people) while the G10 is a people carrier and probably doesn't have the structure for a pile of cement bags or whatever.

It seems that there is a choice of 4 engines, three of them being Mitsubishi sourced.

The 4th engine appears to be the first use of the Longbridge developed 2L NLE engine which will be fitted to MGs and Roewes in future. There appear to be two versions of it (doesn't that make five engine choices?), a 2L NASP and the 2L Turbo producing 225 bhp - that should make for a good 120mph school minibus Twisted Evil
