Just found this article again as MG3 it set for its press and dealer day. Could it really be that this rare interview with William Wang was never posted here?

It's 11 months old and looks optimistic now (we never got 50 dealers and are actually closer to 30 - let alone 150 outlets). Still shows big plans publicly stated.

MG plans to triple UK dealer network

July 2012: "William Wang planning 150 outlets" William-Wang-MG250

MG is planning to triple its UK dealer network as the Longbridge-based brand prepares to launch a range of new products led by a new entry model.

The carmaker, owned by Shanghai based SAIC Motors, plans to increase its 40 strong network to 50 sites by the end of the year and up to 150 sites to give it the geographical spread it needs to sell 10,000 cars by 2015.

The brand currently only sells the petrol-engined MG6, in saloon and hatchback formats, but will add its own diesel unit before the end of the year.

Speaking exclusively to Motor Trader, MG Motor UK's managing director William Wang (pictured) confirmed the all-new B-segment MG3 will reach showrooms next year, the car is already on sale in China but needs to be re-engineered for the UK.

“The MG3 will go on sale in the third quarter of 2013. We want this car to be more British and European and to do this we need more engineering time,” he said.

Wang also confirmed the brand is also looking at introducing a Focus-sized MG5, also on sale in China, and an all-new C-segment SUV which is currently in development.

Wang said he expects UK sales to end this year at around 2,000 units and will double next year with the addition of the MG6 diesel and MG3.

Priority open points for the brand include Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Leicester, Oxford, Swindon, London and the along the south coast from Southampton along through Devon and down to Cornwall. (all those places remain dealerless)

Last week it added Brown & Gammons in Baldock, Hertfordshire, to its network.

To be fair the figure of 150 is by 2015. Still, they are heading in the wrong direction at the moment. Maybe today will include an announcement?

More on this was obviously said at MG3 journo road test day in Bognor Regis on Tuesday 3/3/2013.

[MG3] gives MG’s growing dealer network (currently numbering about 30, but set to grow to 50 by the end of the year and hopefully 100 by the end of 2015) something that it can really work with.

[MG Motor] is aiming to have around 100 dealers on board by the end of 2015, as well as a network of service agents with an as-yet unnamed national chain.

1,730 - only accurate to the nearest 10 scratch

MG Motor UK has a dozen new dealers waiting in the wings to open sales points following the launch this month of the MG3 supermini.

The new car brand has a network of 30 existing franchisees, most operating multi-franchised locations such as Toomey in Basildon, who'll get their first MG3 demonstration cars on Monday, September 9.

However it wants a much larger sales and service network in the long term as its product range broadens.

The MG3 has been designed by the SAIC Design Centre in the UK and is being built in Longbridge, Birmingham, from kits shipped over from China.

Sharing the same market segment as the Ford Fiesta, Mazda2 and Kia Rio, the 105bhp MG3 has been positioned to undercut its rivals considerably, with prices starting at £8,399 and rising to £9,995.

MG Motor UK sales and marketing director Guy Jones said first full year MG3 sales are expected to be 1,730 units, rising to 2,630 in the second year. It will be incremental sales to the MG6 model line, he said.

"The MG3 enables us to get going with our dealer network, we now have enough products to get dealers to join the franchise. We've been talking to them for two years but previously there wasn't a really profitable business case for them," Jones added.

Richard Hales, MG Motor UK regional operations manager, said every franchise applicant is visited by MG Motor UK managing director William Wang to discuss the long-term opportunities.

The MG3 is heavily biased towards retail customers, and an online configurator is being launched to ensure prospects can explore all the customisation and graphics options available.

What did they predict for MG6 - 2000 a year? 1730 in Year One averages out at just over 140 a month or ten times current MG6 sales! Or do they know each of the existing 30 dealers will sell one a year and have added that 30 to the rest?

1730 will be a total including extra during new registration months I expect. Say 140 per normal month, plus an additional 25 on plate change months = 1730.

Gven that Guy Jones has been vary wary of quoting sales figures in the past I am stunned that he is now giving such an accurate figure and am thinking this may be the forecast annual UK production total rather than a sales estimate. Looking forward to finding out who the 'dozen new dealers' are. They will have to get set up soon if they are to benefit from the TV and press ads that are promised to follow the launch..

Maybe the word "precise" would be a better choice than "accurate"?

Yes, fair point! I think it is very precise and as such can really only be based on planned production figures as sales can surely only be estimated to fairly round figures or targets at this stage. Unless he quoted the production figure, then when questioned, said they hoped to sell all produced...as this was a quote in a dealer mag I guess sales figures are always of key interest. Either way it still must be a tough job getting new dealers on board especially given the sales performance of the 6 so far.
