Just found this article again as MG3 it set for its press and dealer day. Could it really be that this rare interview with William Wang was never posted here?
It's 11 months old and looks optimistic now (we never got 50 dealers and are actually closer to 30 - let alone 150 outlets). Still shows big plans publicly stated.
MG plans to triple UK dealer network
Monday, 23 July 2012
MG is planning to triple its UK dealer network as the Longbridge-based brand prepares to launch a range of new products led by a new entry model.
The carmaker, owned by Shanghai based SAIC Motors, plans to increase its 40 strong network to 50 sites by the end of the year and up to 150 sites to give it the geographical spread it needs to sell 10,000 cars by 2015.
The brand currently only sells the petrol-engined MG6, in saloon and hatchback formats, but will add its own diesel unit before the end of the year.
Speaking exclusively to Motor Trader, MG Motor UK's managing director William Wang (pictured) confirmed the all-new B-segment MG3 will reach showrooms next year, the car is already on sale in China but needs to be re-engineered for the UK.
“The MG3 will go on sale in the third quarter of 2013. We want this car to be more British and European and to do this we need more engineering time,” he said.
Wang also confirmed the brand is also looking at introducing a Focus-sized MG5, also on sale in China, and an all-new C-segment SUV which is currently in development.
Wang said he expects UK sales to end this year at around 2,000 units and will double next year with the addition of the MG6 diesel and MG3.
Priority open points for the brand include Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Leicester, Oxford, Swindon, London and the along the south coast from Southampton along through Devon and down to Cornwall. (all those places remain dealerless)
Last week it added Brown & Gammons in Baldock, Hertfordshire, to its network.
