Back in 2002, China entered the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and was rewarded by winning bids for two of the world's most important events, first was the 2008 Beijing Olympics and second was the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

With 2010 fast approaching, SAIC is making its preparations. The event runs from 1st May to 31st October with "Green Technology", or "New Energy" featuring throughout the exhibits, including a 2.8MW solar panel on the roof of the exhibition center.

Yesterday, Shanghai Automotive announced that for the Expo it will operate nearly a thousand new energy vehicles covering four power systems (electric, super capacitors, fuel cells and hybrid), to help achieve the World Expo "zero-emission" and "Low-emissions" green goals.

SAIC has clearly put forward the industrialization of new energy vehicle development goals. In accordance with this objective, in 2010, comprehensive a fuel-efficient 20% reduction Roewe 750 mixed hybrid cars will be mass marketed; in 2012, a more than 50% fuel-reduction plug-in Roewe 550 sedan will be available in volume; in the same year, SAIC's own brand of pure electric cars will be launched to the market, with truly zero emissions. As a result, SAIC will be the first manufacturer in China to achieve the goal of industrialization of new energy vehicles.

According to Shanghai Automotive relevant sources, at present SAIC has formed the most complete industrial chain of new energy vehicles in seeking international cooperation, SAIC actively foster the domestic component suppliers and ultimately the formation of strategic security, self-control of the industrial chain system. SAIC is currently developing innovative plug-in hybrid drive technology, electromechanical coupling has entered the stage of prototype trial. This will effectively circumvent Toyota, GM and other domestic and international barriers to produce hybrid products. A more compact, more efficient electric drive transmission is expected in 2012 fitted to SAIC's new energy cars.
