    http://www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/news/mg-news/mg-motor-uk/news-analysis-3s-launch-whats-next-mg/

    [Clive Goldthorp]
Thailand’s Bangkok Post recently reported that SAIC Motor-CP Company Limited
    – the Joint Venture between SAIC Motor and the Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group which is currently completing a 50,000 vehicle a year manufacturing facility in Rayong where production will begin next February – ‘is conducting a feasibility study about investing in a second plant [in Thailand] as it intends to make [the country] its manufacturing base for right-hand-drive vehicles to serve both the local and export markets.’

The Bangkok Post adds that ‘the second plant would enable SAIC Motor-CP’s production to rise to 150,000-200,000 vehicles a year’ and that ‘SAIC Motor aims to export from Thailand to right-hand-driving countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and Britain.’ How would such an additional manufacturing facility impact on the prospects for a return to full-scale production at MG Birmingham? Will and, if so, when might UK market MGs such as the 3 and 6 be built in Thailand and what role will MG Birmingham then play in the marque’s much-awaited return to the European market?

    [Guy Jones]

As you know, I have repeatedly stated that our role is to expand UK production and sales from hundreds into thousands of units this year with the addition of MG3 to the model range. MG is now a global business and it is exciting to see that it will shortly enter the important South East Asian market via Thailand. Increasing demand for RHD products will increase demand for RHD products in our business which can only help the UK.

"Production will begin next February" - does he mean this February, 2014? That's as good as now! Those cars are going somewhere!

Sad Pat, i think you and i are on the same wave length as far as Thailand is concerned.

I cannot envisage full production ever returning to the UK if what we have just read is true.

However one can only remain optimistic.

I would be surprised if it takes as long as next February, but this February seems a little optimistic for anything but test production.

Seems like the exact same plan they had for Longbridge, down to the model they are beginning with and the first production numbers.

Is this facility going to be a CKD operation as we have in the UK or with it be a bash/weld/paint plant?

At the moment it is low volume CKD. I think SAIC still remember trouble with the unions in Korea and Thailand will have to prove itself worthy of further development before they get more. Essentially it is to avoid taxes when exporting to Australia etc. so there is no real reason to go beyond CKD at present.

I don't think it affects Longbridge in any way, it is production for RHD parts of Asia and Oceania, Longbridge is for Europe and maybe RHD parts of Africa.

I think time will tell. If they are to remain truly global with a full range of cars they will need more than one RHD assembly plant anyway so Thailand would never be the sole manufacturing facility for those models. Longbridge might end up supplying LHD to europe too I suppose.

For tax reasons, Longbridge will supply all European Union countries whichever side of the road they drive on, just need those SGE engines to arrive... any news on the Adam getting it's SGE, I've still not seen a date...

First MG6 rolls off the Thai production line

    MG Thailand News 636375

SAIC Motor-CP displays the MG6 1.8-litre saloon at its Rayong plant yesterday.

SAIC Motor-CP Co, the Chinese-Thai car maker, is planning to invest 30-40 billion baht in a second Thai plant after its first plant in Rayong rolled out the MG6 1.8-litre saloon yesterday.

The company has already acquired 500 rai of land in Chon Buri for the plant, which is expected to be ready by 2018.

President Wu Huan said that once the second plant becomes operational, the company will move car manufacturing there from the first plant, which will be designated to produce auto parts or powertrains.

SAIC Motor-CP is a joint venture between Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) and CP Group.

It is investing 9 billion baht in the first phase for the plant in Rayong's Hemaraj Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate. SAIC holds a 51% stake in the venture, with CP holding the rest.

Production capacity will be 50,000 vehicles a year, mainly for the well-known British brand MG, which the Chinese firm bought in 2005, and Maxus Datong, bought by SAIC in 2010.

The second plant will enable SAIC Motor-CP's production to rise to between 150,000 and 200,000 vehicles a year.

SAIC is the largest car maker in China, with annual production and sales of 4 million vehicles and 60,000 exports.

It operates four car brands, with plans to introduce Roewe, MG Rover and Yuejin, and has six plants across China and one in Britain.

SAIC Motor-CP aims to export from Thailand to right-hand-drive countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and Britain.

Its Rayong plant yesterday officially rolled out the MG6. Prices for the saloon will be made available to the public on June 19. Delivery is expected next month.

The company expects to sell 2,000 MG6s this year, mainly in the Thai market.

“The MG6 is just our beginning,” said SAIC Motor-CP board chairman Thanakorn Seriburi. “Our automotive business aims to expand production in the future to cover MG’s sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks and Maxus Datong’s commercial vans.”

According to Mr Thanakorn, the company plans to produce 14,000 MG vehicles under three models — MG3, MG5 and MG6 — next year and start exporting to Malaysia in 2015.

Under its three-year plan from 2014-16, SAIC Motor-CP has set an ambitious target to take a 10% share of Thailand's automotive market and launch another 6-7 models in the kingdom.

SAIC Motor-CP has 15 dealers and service centres while planning to expand the number to cover 30 locations nationwide this year.

SAIC Motor-CP is one of 10 car makers including five existing eco-car manufacturers that have recently applied for the second phase of the previous government's eco-car scheme.

The 10 projects are set to produce 1.58 million eco-cars with an investment about 100 billion baht higher than the combined outlay from the five eco-car manufacturers in the first phase.

The existing five manufacturers are prepared to invest 86.8 billion baht for the production of 753,000 eco-cars, while the five newcomers are prepared to spend 52 billion to roll out 828,000 vehicles.

Mr Wu said the company cannot disclose any investment and expansion details until the Board of Investment (BoI) approves SAIC Motor-CP’s eco-car proposal.

Kasikorn Research Center forecasts the second phase of the eco-car scheme could generate annual production of at least 500,000 vehicles because the BoI requires automakers to produce 100,000 units a year of their model by the fourth year of their eco-car operation.

Thai production was 2.45m vehicles in 2012 of which 1m were exported, so the Thai market must be at least 1.5m cars. MG plan to go from about 2,000 to 150,000 cars (10%) in effectively two years!

If they can assemble 150,000 cars plus exports there, it's going to be a far more important factory than Longbridge...

That's loud, so much more exciting than a 2014 Formula 1 car, and affordable too (, even though you do need to be a millionaire to afford one.)  Twisted Evil

Interesting. New to the market RHD cars in up to the minute spec. Makes you wonder why it's not being offered to UK customers. It's really quite difficult to understand the seemingly disjointed operations between UK and other markets.

Can't really tell, they may have gone on sale on the 30th, or the 1st - the second months sales will give a much better idea.

MG Thailand News Empty MG in Thailand

Post by patpending Fri Nov 28, 2014 3:03 am

Thailand is presumably one of the key countries for MG so I have gathered a couple of other threads in here.

    David Knowles spotted this:

    http://www.just-auto.com/news/saic-to-make-mg-eco-cars-in-thailand_id153023.aspx

    My response:

    So we have:

Thailand 1 (Rayong), 50,000 capacity, assembling MG6 (and MG3 from next year) - what is Longbridge turning out? Around 2,000 a year?

Thailand 2, huge planned 200,000 capacity, exact scope unclear, now over half EVs, what % of the ASEAN EV market is 110,000?, was planned to replace Rayong, moon on a stick planned, what will actually happen?

Wu Huan, president of the company, confirmed that 110,000 units of the new plant's overall annual capacity will be allocated to the production of eco-car, to be sold across the ASEAN region under the MG brand. The remainder of the plant's capacity will be used to produce other MG vehicles.

SAIC Motor-CP Co Ltd already has a 50,000-unit assembly facility in Rayong, which began assembling the MG6 model earlier this year. Local sales of this model have been disappointing so far. Only 300 units have been sold since its launch in June - well short of the full-year target of 2,000 units.

The MG3 will be assembled at the plant from next year.

I hope Thailand 2 is built before Ardmore Oklahoma.
