"Killer prices for new MG3"

http://www.bangkokpost.com/auto/news/499017/killer-prices-for-new-mg3
Although the MG3 isn’t built to Ecocar rules with special excise tax, its price range of 479,000-595,000 baht (say £10k-£12.3k) practically matches Ecocar-labelled hatchbacks like the Toyota Yaris.
Non-Ecocar players like the Honda Jazz and Ford Fiesta - both available with 1.5-litre engines - cost over 700,000 baht (say £14½k) in top-of-the-line forms.

note 1) that these cars are Rayong-assembled 2) that a dealer network is key to Thai success.

MG3 is set to outsell MG6 8 to 1 and the first exports from Thailand are set to be Malaysia next year.
SAIC aims to sell 5,000 units of the Rayong-made car this year. Dealer network expansion will be crucial for the budding business, as people prefer a test drive before making a buying decision, said company president Wu Huan. "We got good feedback in terms of the brand and product from the MG6, our first model introduced in Thailand, but the biggest problem is the limited accessibility to potential buyers," he said. The company is moving into the highly competitive B-segment market after launching the four-door MG6 last year and selling 300 units.
Founded in 2012, MG Sales (Thailand) Co has 10 dealers in Bangkok and 20 in the provinces, said vice-president Pongsak Lertrudeewattanavong. Plans call for adding 20 new dealers this year, bringing the total to 50. The existing 20 provincial dealers are in major provinces, and 10 more will be opened in secondary provinces. Bangkok will have 10 new dealers as well.

300 hire/fleet orders for the 3!
http://www.thaipr.net/auto/609272
http://www.thaipr.net/auto/609272
five major car leasing companies have signed a big order for more than 300 MG3 Hatchback and Xross for use around the country. Fleet operators are hard to satisfy because the criteria used for is not just the initial purchase prices, but the maintenance costs, reliability, resale value and service performances. This is a stamp seal of approval on the quality and reliability of the MG3. The five car leasing companies which have signed fleet orders with us today are True Leasing, Krungthai Leasing, TSS Auto Rental, Biz Car Rent and Q.C. Leasing.

Re: MG Thailand News
Although the deal fell through for Weststar to buy the entire LDV Maxus brand, they are clearly assembling Maxus. Wonder where the RHD Maxus for NZ and Ireland come from?
The speculation that the Malaysian assembly plant could be used for MG cars seems unlikely.

The speculation that the Malaysian assembly plant could be used for MG cars seems unlikely.
http://paultan.org/2015/05/14/mg-return-malaysia-saic-rm1bil-deal-weststar/
Chinese automotive conglomerate SAIC Motor Corp Ltd and local commercial vehicle distributor Weststar Maxus Sdn Bhd have signed an assembly and distribution deal worth up to RM1 billion in a move that could see the return of the MG brand in Malaysia, according to The Star.
The report from the English language daily, citing sources close to the deal, states that SAIC is looking to take up a 49% stake in Weststar Maxus and will provide the distribution rights for its wide range of vehicles, including cars from the MG brand, passenger vans and pick-up trucks. These will add to SAIC’s Maxus brand of commercial vehicles that Weststar already sells.
In addition, SAIC will also join forces with Weststar Maxus to set up an assembly plant here – Weststar currently builds Maxus vehicles at its facility in Port Klang, so this plant could be used for MG’s CKD operations.

Thailand’s Bangkok Post recently reported that SAIC Motor-CP Company Limited – the Joint Venture between SAIC Motor and the Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group which is currently completing a 50,000 vehicle a year manufacturing facility in Rayong where production will begin next February – ‘is conducting a feasibility study about investing in a second plant [in Thailand] as it intends to make [the country] its manufacturing base for right-hand-drive vehicles to serve both the local and export markets.’
The Bangkok Post adds that ‘the second plant would enable SAIC Motor-CP’s production to rise to 150,000-200,000 vehicles a year’ and that ‘SAIC Motor aims to export from Thailand to right-hand-driving countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and Britain.’ How would such an additional manufacturing facility impact on the prospects for a return to full-scale production at MG Birmingham? Will and, if so, when might UK market MGs such as the 3 and 6 be built in Thailand and what role will MG Birmingham then play in the marque’s much-awaited return to the European market?
[Guy Jones]
As you know, I have repeatedly stated that our role is to expand UK production and sales from hundreds into thousands of units this year with the addition of MG3 to the model range. MG is now a global business and it is exciting to see that it will shortly enter the important South East Asian market via Thailand. Increasing demand for RHD products will increase demand for RHD products in our business which can only help the UK.
"Production will begin next February" - does he mean this February, 2014? That's as good as now! Those cars are going somewhere!
The second factory has got the go-ahead - target 300,000 production! - and it will be a full production factory with:
body welding and painting operations and final assembly for MG vehicles and will cost some THB30-40bn (US$860m-1.1bn). The plant would become SAIC's main global production hub for right hand drive vehicles and will have an eventual annual production capacity of 300,000 units.
So in future the cars assembled in Longbridge will come from Thailand, as will the ready-to-drive cars. A new challenge for quality control!

Re: MG Thailand News
According to Chen Zhixin, president of the Chinese carmaker Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC Motor), the 700,000-square-metre facility will handle MG vehicle production processes such as body assembly, vehicle assembly and painting under one roof. "Thailand is set to be a production hub for right-hand-drive vehicles and SAIC Motor aims to make 300,000 units a year in the very near future," said SAIC Motor chairman Chen Hong.

Re: MG Thailand News
It's a long-term investment. I was surprised to see that the UK and India are vying on 2015 figures for no.5 world market at about 1.5m cars each, behind China (11.0m); USA (3.5m); Japan (2.1m); and Germany (1.7m). Other RHD markets are Australia (15th, 469k); Indonesia (16th, 421k); Malaysia (22nd, 244k); South Africa (26th, 181181k); Thailand (29th, 155k); Ireland (36th, 101k); Pakistan (39th, 92k); New Zealand (48th, 48k) - etc... so that's a potential world market of some 6.7m cars out of 23m outside China...

but we have already established that Hemaraj will cost some 4 times as much to build as Rayong. Can it really be 200 times the size (new: 437 - old 1.7) - I suspect an errant decimal point.
