I was thinking "We know which country has a border with Singapore" and looking for the orangey-red Weststar ad with a Maxus in KL and found this from August 2011:
http://westpro.wordpress.com/2011/08/07/new-weststar-maxus/
Presumably none of this happened.
But "where in the world" does mguk.org reach?
That's Weststar themselves 18 months ago, I think...

Weststar who made history by becoming SAIC’s first ever overseas joint venture partner, will begin receiving the CKD vehicles beginning August this year and assemble them at their facility in Klang and Port Klang with an initial capacity of 2,000 units. The plant will gradually increase its capacity to 10,000 units annually.
Weststar Maxus Distributors (initially Weststar LDV Distributors) has been the Malaysian distributor for the full range of Maxus commercial vehicles since 2006, supplying 80 per cent of its volume to the Government Agencies and the balance to the retail customers.
Weststar Maxus, who also holds the distribution rights for the entire Asia Pacific region, including Japan, plans to launch the Maxus van in Indonesia and Thailand in early 2012. We are also looking into markets in the Philippines, Indo China and Vietnam.
Presumably none of this happened.

Let watch this brief video.

May take a while to work it out, but Weststar appears to have no dealers in Singapore: http://maxus-distributors.com/sales-dealer-locator/ , or in fact outside Malaysia.patpending wrote:Presumably none of this happened.
I was going to suggest it was because Singapore is right hand drive, but actually they both are along with Oz and NZ!

I suspect that Singapore has been included in with the Oceania region, and that in this case "Asia Pacific region" does not include Oceania!patpending wrote:I was thinking "We know which country has a border with Singapore"

Isn't that interesting - so they ARE making Maxus in Malaysia? - but exporting whole vans to Singapore, Oz and NZ from China?
Whereas the Thai JV will supply cars to Australia... and where else, I wonder?
In the region Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia (all of which have dealerships) drive on the right and Burma changed in 1970. However, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia all drive on the left. Nepal is already an MG country and they drive on the left too (where practicable!)

I'd not heard this explanation before:
Until the mid-60's, all Lancias, even in LHD Italy, were manufactured as RHD. Lancia intended the cars to be suitable for use on the Alpine passes, so when driving on the right, the driver was also on the right, and could see the edge of the road. Apparently falling off the edge of the road is a greater danger than head-on collisions. (Clint Rodgers) Modern Italian trucks in the Alps are still often right-hand-drive for the same reason.
And it seems the problem is even worse on the rails:
Rui Gustavo Crespo notes that where neighboring countries run their trains on opposite sides of the track, trains must switch sides at the border. "In The Netherlands trains run on the right, but in Belgium they move on the left. Last Sunday I travelled between the two countries. At Roosendal (a Dutch city close to the border), the train stopped at the railway station and had to wait for permission to move to the left track: from then, although we were still in Netherlands, our train was conducted on the left."

I like Italy best:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-_and_left-hand_traffic#Italy
though they do say that the Irish Republic is planning to cement its membership of the EU by having all cars drive on the right from April 1st. If the experiment is a success, it will be extended a month later to lorries and buses which will then switch to driving on the right also.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-_and_left-hand_traffic#Italy
In Italy the practice of traffic driving on the right first began in the late 1890s, but it was not until the mid 1920s that it became standard throughout the country. There was a long period when traffic in the countryside drove on the right while major cities continued to drive on the left.[85] Rome, for example, did not change from left to right until 20 October 1924. Milan was the last Italian city to change to driving on the right (3 August 1926). Cars had remained right-hand drive (RHD) until this time. Italian car makers Alfa Romeo and Lancia did not produce LHD cars until as late as 1950 and 1953, respectively.[86]

Weststar's website is up to date and talks of assembling 500-600 vans a year... (about ten vans a week) (since when?)

Assembling, Distributing, Marketing & Sales and After Sales Services
Weststar Maxus Distributors Sdn Bhd (formerly known as Weststar LDV Distributors Sdn Bhd) is the sole distributor for the Weststar Maxus van and also handles the sales & marketing and after sales services for the Malaysian market. In addition to this, Weststar Maxus Distributors customises the van for a range of commercial uses, such as medical, postal, security, VIP transport and other services.
With a strong belief in building customised vehicles to perfection and delivering quality products to the customer, Weststar Maxus Distributors quickly won contracts with various Malaysian governmental and commercial entities such as the Fire Department, Health Ministry, Armed Forces, Youth & Sports Ministry and various hospitals.
This led to sales of 500 – 600 units annually, as the Weststar Maxus became a familiar sight in the country.
