Like China, the 350 is well ahead of the others. Is it because it is a good car or because the Ukraine prefers that size of car?
0.3% isn't bad, it puts it up among some major brand names and not far from Honda, BMW, Volvo, Great Wall. Getting from there up to 3% requires plenty of dealers and a lots of advertising, 5% puts you in the top 10 and since the top brands in the Ukraine are the cheaper brands, 5% is more than Ford.

The other cars are larger. Would MG5 sell, do you think? What about MG3? Would it have to be very cheap?

My opinion is... MG have chosen good but very hard way to sell cars (way as Hyundai/Kia done) - good quality cars with prices similar to class leaders (cheaper 10-20%). Other chinese cars are 25-50% cheaper, customer doesn't ask why, he already knows - it's chinese car! MG wants to be as much as possible nearer to EU or Japan cars, they don't want to be called as chinese brand.

Secondly, all Europe needs more time, today "chinese cars" means "cheap & low quality cars". But after 3-5 years there will be many chinese brands and we will not be able to call all of them by one word or "ahh, all cars from China are crap!". MG occupied clever position from the beginning, so after few years they will not need to prove something for somebody! Maybe in the future MG might be called as a prestigious brand because other brands mission - "cheaper as possible, bigger sales as possible", no value added (Geely, Great Wall action in Ukraine, Belarus, Bulgaria).

All countries should start selling MG3 as soon as possible. MG can't show high sales when they have only Insignia/Passat/Octavia size car. MG350 boosted sales in Ukraine, MG3 - in Chile, smaller car - higher sales. I wish best luck to MG!

Yes, I think all we see from outside is volume, but volume without profitability is called "BMC Mini" and brings a company down.

However, to survive in Europe including the UK, MG needs much more volume - but not at any price.

I have been reading in several places that both Fiat and Vauxhall-Opel have been suffering due to having no small SUVs - so now we see 500L and Mokka imported from Korea.

Opel in particular has espoused a model with big car plants in the Eurozone, especially Germany, making many cars for Britain whose sterling receipts make those cars less profitable.

However, I am sure MG cannot ignore the European market, and it cannot afford to be a niche player, so volumes must increase. One good thing about post-crash MG is that the cars are not cheap and tacky. Reducing the price would not bring about a step change in sales .

I can see that 53 is well up on the 30 in January but that doesn't really mean anything without understanding the Ukraine market - do you have a market share % figure again please so that we can understand if the increase is a real improvement?

MG 3 models had 0.3% market share on January, on April only MG350 has 0.4%, so let's hope for 0.5-0.6% including other 2 models.

Presumably Guy Jones, MG Director of Marketing and Sales doesn't cover China as well, just the rest of the world (MG UK area)?

I wonder? If MG3 XROSS/ CROSS is not coming to MG Birmingham, his responsibility must be wider than just the UK or even the EU. Even if it is, they would hardly be supplying the Ukraine soon.

Needs bigger wheels; it just looks like the standard model with a strange paint job.

All those are right hand drive markets that only get cars available in the UK (currently only MG6, soon to include the MG3), although I suspect the Ozzie ones have a few changes for Oz rules.

I had assumed that MG Motor UK was involved in all those markets, but that does not explain his interest in an XROSS...

I think the explanation is that it is easier, cheaper and maybe preferable to the customers to do business with most countries via Longbridge than direct with China and they don't necessarily want the profits to arrive back in China anyway, they are spending a fair amount at Longbridge developing new models and getting money out of China isn't a no-cost process.

I hope I've read that table right, the figures in the July and 2013 columns don't seem to make any sense...

Windy, everything is fine with that table, Ukrainian sales list is never full.. When Matt has a full table he writes "Top 176 All-models".

Anyway, that means that July sales was:
MG6 - 23
MG5 - 1
MG3 Cross - 3

And it means that they also sold 24 MG350s in June and July (2013 1-8 months total 295, 2013 1-5months total 229).

September:

MG 350 - 40, 0.3%
MG 5 - 18, 0.1%
MG 6 - 15, 0.1%
MG 3 Cross - 12, 0.1%
Total - 85
Almost 3 cars per day.

Was just reading a history of Morris Garages (Morris Motors will love this) and found some figures that don't match:

AUTO-Consulting information, in the year 2012 in Ukraine has sold car 389 MG. for the first 4 months of the year 2013 car 342 already sold, compared with the same period last year, sales increased by 350%. According to Oleg Karabaev, Director of the distributor company MG, we maintain attractive prices for the model line of cars MG in Ukraine and significantly increase sales this year. After all, the prices of cars British brand of Morris Garages in our country start from 119900 USD. Only at the end of the year we sell more car 1000 MG, says Mr. Karabaev.
