MG’s long-promised SUV/crossover model has been caught in the final stages of testing in Northern Europe.

First shown in concept form as the CS at the Shanghai Motor Show last spring, the new car is understood to be based on the same platform as the MG 5 hatchback and MG 6 notchback.

Like the concept, this production car has been styled under the guidance of MG’s global design director Anthony Williams-Kenny, with much of its detailing - such as the outline shape of the headlamps and the inserts on the lower front bumper - using the octagonal MG badge for inspiration.

MG hopes that the CS crossover will help the company make more serious inroads into the international car market, and points out that the compact crossover niche is one of the fastest growing markets across the globe.

The launch of the baby SUV should coincide with MG’s all-new family of modern GDI engines, including a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged unit that it says will rival Ford’s equivalent EcoBoost.

The GDI petrol engine range will be launched in China at the end of 2014 and come to Europe a year later. It will also include 1.4 and 1.5-litre turbocharged units. The engines will be sold in the MG 3, 5 and 6 as well as the new crossover.

“Our benchmark for the 1.0-litre has to be the Ford EcoBoost engine,” said MG’s head of powertrain, former Ricardo UK managing director Paul McNamara. “Ford has got the technology to market first and changed perceptions. Our goal is to be competitive with their figures and attain the best real-world results possible.”

McNamara also confirmed MG was working on two dual-clutch transmissions; a wet clutch version that can handle 265lb ft of torque that will go on sale in China this year, and a dry clutch version that can take 165lb ft of torque and will likely not be ready for sale until 2015.
