SAIC Motor - April Sales 2010

The Roewe 550 has taken a couple of steps up the ranking table,
The MG 6 has taken 29 steps up the ranking table,
The MG 3SW has taken 32 steps down the ranking table,
    The Roewe 750 is static,
The MG 7 drops 2 places,

But the big news - The Roewe 350 is straight in as third best seller for SAIC Motor behind the Roewe 550 and MG 6. A bit of a supprise as it wasn't officially launched until the Beijing Show which only started on the 23rd of the month!

All of which pushes SAIC Motor 2 steps up the ranks to 19th, just ahead of Dongfeng Honda.

Just out of interest, if SAIC Motor is 19th in China, all the other bits of SAIC together must be pretty high...

The 2010 April national automobile manufacturers of car sales rank:

    1 Shanghai General Motors 82086
    2 Volkswagen 70090
    3 Shanghai Volkswagen 66019
    4 Dongfeng Nissan 47872
    5 Beijing modern 47575
    6 BYD 45104

    8 Changan Ford 33168
    9 Kili automobile 32367
    10 Shenlong automobile 31873
    11 FAW Toyota 31641
    12 Guangzhou Honda 27133
    13 FAW car 22865
    14 Dongfeng yueda KIA 20096
    15 Tianjin FAW 19042
    16 Chang'an Suzuki 17008
    17 Guangzhou Toyota 16387
    18 Shenyang Brilliance 13907
    19 Shanghai Automotive 13007
    20 Dongfeng Honda 11839

Not a perfect translation, but I think 161,112 a month is a lot of cars!
In fact they must be on target to exceed 2 million this year...
And don't forget that they make a lot more vehicles than just the cars.

Thanks Windy, so through their JVs SAIC are no.1 and no.3 also!

How come there are two kinds of Volkswagen? Did VW start with the Santana and then go it alone?

Volkswagen have two joint ventures, one with SAIC and one with FAW (First Auto Works), seems a bit greedy but it works!

For some reason the autotranslate considers FAW Volkswagen to just be Volkswagan!

Mind you the characters don't mention cars at all so it is still a fairly clever translation:

Hmm, I recall "One Steam, South Steam, Above Steam, four" to the tune of the Banana Splits,

In there I spotted a One, a Steam and a Shang. Must remember "people".

Is "Mitsubishi" ever translated into Chinese or is it phonetic? Does it mention "three diamonds"? Laughing (there again, "three diamonds" in Chinese could well be "Mitsubishi" Laughing) (certainly looks similar, "my san" 三钻石三菱)

Mitsubishi ( 三菱 ) ranked 35 with 2649 cars sold in April, MG on it's own is ahead!

The same characters are used in both languages and have the same meaning so it needs no translation, however the characters in chinese would be pronounced "san ling". I would guess that most pronounce it Mitusbishi though?

It appears that it actually means "3 water chestnuts" rather than "3 diamonds", the company started off as a shipping company! The "3 diamonds" is a correct alternative translation of the characters.

So it has something in common with the MG logo!

    Origins of the Famous Emblem

The name "Mitsubishi" refers to the three-diamond emblem. "Mitsubishi" is a combination of the words mitsu and hishi. Mitsu means three.

Hishi means water chestnut, and Japanese have used the word for a long time to denote a rhombus or diamond shape. Japanese often bend the "h" sound to a "b" sound when it occurs in the middle of a word. So they pronounce the combination of mitsu and hishi as mitsubishi.

Yataro Iwasaki, the founder of the old Mitsubishi organization, chose the three-diamond mark as the emblem for his company. The mark is suggestive of the three-leaf crest of the Tosa Clan, Yataro's first employer, and also of the three stacked rhombuses of the Iwasaki family crest.

Although those leaves look like chestnut leaves, they dont look like water chestnut leaves scratch

SAIC Motor - May Sales 2010

The Roewe 350 jumps from position 126 up to position 66 with 4310 sold. The MG3SW is up from 137 to 123.
The MG7 stays in position 149.
The Roewe 550 is down from 24 to 56, the MG6 drops from 102 to 106 and the Roewe 750 from 128 to 133.
That leaves SAIC Motor maintaining 19th place.

That's a good figure for the 350s first full month on sale,
I've no idea why the 550 has done so poorly this month?

China is seeing a downturn in auto sales at the moment, or at least a drop in the rate of increase! I suspect the drop shown by the Roewe 550 is typical, SAIC-Motor is doing better due to the 350. Ignoring the spike in June the figures are actually very slightly up!

So the GM JV has done well, but VW is only in the Top 20 twice instead of three times!

Of course sales are up on last month ignoring last month - that's like EBITDA (pre-cost profit) Laughing

That is what the figures say - I spent a while trying to work it out before posting but I don't understand! (The third has disapeared rather than fallen out of the top 20.)

It does mean that SAIC are now in 1st, 2nd and 16th - must be an improvement.

A poor month for the Roewe 750, falling down below the MG3SW once again, also poor for the UK MG TF. The Roewe 350 has now just about caught the Roewe 550.

Although Chinese sales were up for the month, SAIC has lost two places putting them back into 18th position, even worse, FAW Volkswagan have taken the No. 1 spot and if you include UK sales then total SAIC Auto sales are down.

Well the long term trend is still up drunken

But they do now seem to be on target to miss the annual sales target of 180,000, especially if the MG3 doesn't appear until Guangzhou!

The worrying thing is loosing the ranking positions but maybe that just indicates that they are selling to a different/more specialised set of customers.

Well the long term trend is still up drunken

But they do now seem to be on target to miss the annual sales target of 180,000, especially if the MG3 doesn't appear until Guangzhou!

The worrying thing is loosing the ranking positions but maybe that just indicates that they are selling to a different/more specialised set of customers.
if sales are down, they might not be chasing that elusive deal and profitability could be up...I note the MG6 may not be on sale in the UK until March...

Information from dealers does tend to be somewhat inaccurate, especially when they are trying to sell a car...

Sales of everything are up, MG were very close to having all the ranks up too, Roewe hasn't done so well on the Ranks.

The Roewe 350 just failed to overtake the Roewe 550.

Shanghai GM are back in number 1 and Shanghai VW back in number 2.
