I had to go to Silverlink in Newcastle for my test drive. A 45 mile journey, but much shorter than the other two closest in Harrogate and Hull which are about 80 miles and a hundred miles respectively. Everything was nicely laid back and there was no pressure on anyone. Carl was the salesman and he took me around the car they had which his boss was driving. It was a white one and even at the first glance, it looked splendid, and even though the showroom had a quantity of quality muscle and executive motors on display, the 6 wasn't overshadowed.
I had a good butchers hook in and around the driving position and the other seating area's, had a look under the bonnet, and also in the huge boot where there was a set of golf clubs that were lost in the space. I suggested that the car came with the clubs but Carl wasn't having that.
The seats were lovely and comfy and I was impressed by a number of features like the independant air con or whatever its called that a passenger can choose their own settings for. I'm not sure I need Bluetooth, but I'll certainly use a memory stick to play MP3's from through the USB. I'd read that the switches were cheap and nasty looking but I thought they looked and felt better than okay. All round inside was a lot better than I'd been lead to believe from the reviews I'd read.
Now to the drive. It felt like a beast to sit in. The majority of driving that I do is in either a ZR or a TF, though I do drive small and transit sized vans occasionally at work, so I wasn't overawed by its size, but I was still feeling very nervous as I drove out from the showroom. I needn't have worried because I felt right at home as soon as we got moving. It really was a joy to drive. The car responded beautifully to everything I asked it to do and I felt there were many ways that i didn't push it but could have done. the best way I could describe the feel of the car is probably "elegant", but at the same time I felt like there was a monster under the bonnet if I needed to thrust it a bit at high revs.
The car is the first MG6 in the area and a number of glances I got from other road users and pedestrians showed that. The majority of the looks I got seemed more than favourable.
The drive was over too quickly really, even though we'd had a good scoot around, but I was happy to get back to the garage to sort out the details and get my name down as having purchased one. I've plumped for the top of the range beast with 18" wheels et al in red. When the deal was all sorted, I was told that I was the first person to actually buy one, though two other people had done test drives and were waiting for their finance deals to be sorted.
The worst bit now is gonna be the waiting time. I was told I'll get my car in 4 to 6 weeks, but I'm hoping I'll get it closer to the actual launch date. I really can't wait to get my paws on my own lovely vehicle and put it through its paces.
