Why not use the MG6 diesel for the Maxus? Is it just emisions regulations or does a school bus engine have different requirements?

    could it be

    a) a large, heavy vehicle does indeed have substantially-different requirements, e.g. even more low end torque but top speed less important?

    b) a commercial diesel engine in China will have to deal with some right muck the MG6 engine is not designed for?

For a) you could change the gear ratios, but I can see that b) would be a serious problem, I thought they were going to sort their diesel fuel but nothing seems to have happened, more interested in electric cars.
