    MG opens in Cambridge

Snow and ice won’t stop Santa getting to the opening of Britain’s latest MG dealership.

Senior Sales Executive, Darren Rayner, is a keen snowboarded and he’s on standby in case Santa needs a hand to get to MG Cambridge to the official opening next Tuesday.

MG Cambridge is run by Buckingham & Stanley, one of the best-known retail car businesses in the Cambridge area and is the latest firm to join the growing ranks of MG dealerships.

Darren is one of the 10-strong staff at the High Street dealership in Harston on the south western edge of Cambridge and has been a keen snowboarder for many years.

He said: “To be honest the MG6 has such good traction that we could tow Santa in if it does snow. But I’ll keep my snowboard waxed just in case.”

Andrew Ballard, Operations Director of Cambridge MG, said: “We’ve been very impressed with everything we’ve seen at MG Birmingham and the MG6 is a great car which will win over a lot of people. We have represented Saab for more than 30 years and I think the new MG’s will certainly appeal to Saab drivers too.

“To be associated with such an iconic brand as MG is really exciting and our team is looking forward to offering our new MG service to customers.”

Cambridge MG officially opens on Tuesday, December 18 and is the latest retail business to join the ranks of MG dealers across the UK. The other new MG dealerships which have been opened this year are: Beechwood in Derby, Pinkstone Cars in Stoke-on-Trent, Rivervale in Brighton, Charles Warner in Lincoln, Colleys in Cwmbran and Brown & Gammons in Baldock, Herts.

    Top dealer opens MG site

One of Britain’s biggest and best known motor groups is about to open an MG dealership.

Hartwell will operate an MG dealership in Grimsby and becomes the eighth new MG dealership to open this year. The Hartwell group is 30th on the AM100 list of Britain’s biggest retail motor businesses.

The MG showrooms in Corporation Road, just off the A180, will sell the award-winning MG6 GT fastback and MG6 Magnette sports saloon with a 1.8-litre turbo-petrol engine from December alongside the newly launched 1.9-litre diesel DTi-TECH versions. An official opening event will take place on January 25.

Dave Robertson, General Manager of Hartwell, Grimsby, said: “We’re delighted to be representing the iconic MG brand. The new MG6 is a great product offering superb value for money but it’s also an exciting car to drive and certainly MG fans will recognise its heritage.

“MG fans in Lincolnshire have been waiting for the marque to make a comeback and I don’t think any of them will be disappointed with the MG6. We’re really looking forward to showing people the new car.”

The other new MG dealerships which have been opened this year are: Beechwood in Derby, Pinkstone Cars in Stoke-on-Trent, Rivervale in Brighton, Charles Warner in Lincoln, Brown & Gammons in Baldock, Herts., Colleys in Cwmbran and Cambridge MG.

News from MG MOTOR UK Ltd - Page 13 Empty New MG6 diesel appeals to company car drivers

Post by richardk Thu Dec 20, 2012 8:16 am

    Press release:

    December 20 2012

New MG6 diesel appeals to company car drivers

Diesel-powered versions of the award-winning MG6 have just been launched and are already attracting a lot of interest from fleet buyers and company car drivers.

Class-leading insurance group ratings, extremely low BiK P11D prices and low servicing and repair costs are among key factors which are putting the MG6 DTi-TECH diesel high on the consideration list for company drivers in 2013.

More than half of the cars sold in the D-size segment in the UK are diesels and MG expects to sell 65 per cent of the new MG6 DTi-TECH diesels in the fleet and business sector of the market.

However, while the MG6 offers the interior space and comfort of a D-sector car, it has the dynamic agility of a smaller C-sector model, helping to put the fun back into motoring.

MG estimates that over three years the new MG6 GT and MG6 Magnette DTi-TECH diesels will be among the most economic for many company car drivers to run.

P11D prices for the new MG6 DTi-TECH work out at £16,820 for the GT in S trim; £18,020 for the GT in SE trim; £20,020 for the GT in TSE trim and the Magnette.

The pricing puts the new diesel MGs right in the middle of the competitive car price structure. However, the extremely high levels of standard specification on the MG give it another advantage in the business sector. Cars which have an extensive options list add to the overall taxable value of the car – but with the MG6 there is no options list, just a great value for money package.

Even the S model has an extremely high level of standard trim, including anti-lock braking (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), brake pad wear sensor, brake disc wiping, Stability Control System (SCS) and Hill Hold.

In the cabin there is electronically controlled air conditioning, electric windows all round, ICE consisting of radio, RDS, CD player, MP3, USB and aux-in capability. Body coloured mirrors and a rear spoiler are also standard along with fog lamps.

Move up to the SE model and standard kit includes satellite navigation (which covers 27 countries from Albania to the Vatican City), a rear parking aid and cruise control and the front windows have a one-touch operation. For comfort there is a multi-functional leather steering wheel and cruise control.

A class-leading standard specification on the TSE model has leather sports seats, the satellite navigation system is displayed in full colour and the reversing parking aid has a camera with a large display screen. The all-round electric windows feature one one-touch operation and the TSE has automatic electronic dual zone climate control and the ICE system receives the addition of Bluetooth. TSE models run on larger 18-inch alloy wheels.

Design and engineering development of the new MG6 DTi-TECH diesel, like the petrol versions, was carried out at the MG Birmingham site, home of SAIC’s European Design and Technical Centres. Final assembly also takes place at the Birmingham factory.

Both GT and Magnette models have the in-house 1.9-litre DTi-TECH variable rate turbocharged diesel engine which delivers 150PS. That gives an impressive 0-62mph time of just 8.9 seconds and a maximum speed of 120mph.

Urban driving figures of 46.1mpg are extremely good, allowing the MG6 DTi-TECH diesel to perform economically even in town and city driving, which is not normally a strong point of diesel powered cars.

The new MG diesel has an impressive maximum torque figure of 350NM at 1800 rpm. The torque curve through the six-speed transmission is a particular feature of this new specifically developed power train and offers strong acceleration through the gears with great overtaking speed.

Common rail direct injection and a variable-rate turbocharger mean that the MG6 DTi-TECH diesel has the latest engine technology. And unique to the diesel versions are Stop-Start technology, which improves economy by a further 5%, and Smart Charging. This is a system which saves energy by only supplying power to certain electrical components when it is actually needed.

Diesel MG6 models have E-HPAS – a progressively variable power assistance feature which means that the steering is lighter at parking speeds and firmer at motorway cruising speeds.

With the MG6’s widely acclaimed chassis and suspension, specially tuned for the diesel, the result is a car offering great, sporty handling dynamics while also being a thoroughly practical five-seater. The huge cargo-carrying boot on MG6 models (498-litres to 1,379 litres on the GT and 472-litres to 1,268 litres on the Magnette with the rear seats folded) is truly class-leading.

Like the petrol version, MG6 DTi-TECH diesels offers tremendous value for money and has one of the highest levels of standard equipment levels of any car on the market.

Fuel figures for the diesel give: Urban 46.1 mpg (6.2 l/km), Extra Urban 59.0 mpg (4.8l/km) and Combined 53.5 mpg (5.3 l/km). The CO2 emissions are 139g/100km.

Insurance group ratings for the diesel cars are: S and SE (14E) and TSE and Magnette (15E).

Seven external colours are offered: Burnt Orange, Pitch Black, Regal Red, Granite Grey, Platinum Silver, Arctic White and a new Sapphire Blue.
There are two internal trims: Charcoal Cloth and Graphite Leather.

All MG6 models have a Euro-NCAP 4-Star rating. MG6 was awarded the What Car? 2012 Security Award.

Diesel power added to award-winning MG6

Diesel versions of the award-winning MG6 have been added to the range and the first demonstrators are in selected UK showrooms now.

The DTi-TECH diesel-powered MG6 GT and MG6 Magnette is the second major development in the modern MG story with both cars using a 1.9-litre turbo unit - the first diesel engine from MG’s parent company, SAIC Motor.

News from MG MOTOR UK Ltd - Page 13 Empty Record-breaking year points the way ahead for MG

Post by richardk Mon Jan 07, 2013 9:59 am

    Media Release:

    January 7 2013

Record-breaking year points the way ahead for MG

MG is looking forward to what will be one of the most significant years in the marque’s history after a record-breaking 2012.

Official figures just released have revealed that MG is the fastest growing British brand in the UK, and the story of the revival of the world-famous MG octagon will be given a major boost in 2013.

Just as the old year ticked away, MG introduced DTi-TECH diesel versions of the award-winning MG6 GT and MG6 Magnette to join the petrol models. In 2013 an all-new model, the Fiesta-sized MG3 will start coming off the final assembly line at the MG Birmingham factory.

Last year was a record for MG with more cars sold in the UK than in 2010 and 2011 combined. It was the best year for MG sales in Britain since 2006.

Figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that MG sales grew by a staggering 117% in 2012. This makes MG the fastest growing British automotive brand in the UK.

Eight new MG dealerships opened in 2012 and the network will grow again this year to support the expanding range of new models available in the UK market.

World-wide the MG brand is growing at a faster rate than any time in its 89-year history. MG is owned by SAIC Motor, China’s largest automotive company and the eight largest in the world. There are now 190 MG dealers in China and modern MG’s are sold in more than 40 countries throughout the world.

MG’s for the UK are designed and engineered at the MG Birmingham site where SAIC Motor’s European Design and Technical Centres (SMTC) are located. Final assembly of MGs for the UK market is also carried out at the Birmingham.

In 2013 the Design Centre at the MG Birmingham site will become the fifth largest in Britain when a huge £1.5-million extension plan is completed. This will be the latest story in an on-going investment programme by MG’s parent company which recently saw a £1.4-million Engine Test Cell facility opened at the 60-plus acres site on Lowhill Lane, Longbridge, Birmingham.

This year will also see the MG KX Momentum Racing team compete in the British Touring Car Championship series for a second year. In 2012 MG driver Jason Plato claimed third place in the driver’s championship in what was only supposed to be the team’s ‘learning year’ in MG’s return to the track.

Guy Jones, MG Motor UK’s Sales and Marketing Director, said: “The last few years have seen us laying down foundations to take MG forward. This year will mark the start of a significant new chapter for a brand that is close to the hearts of so many people in Britain and throughout the world.

“In the first quarter of 2013 we will expand the product range with the addition of high technology diesel power train for MG6 and our first special edition model, the MG6 GT BTCC Edition. Later in the year the MG3 super mini will be launched into the largest sector of the UK market. So 2013 certainly promises to be an exciting year for MG.”

It was the best year for MG sales in Britain since 2006.

And those were sales of legacy MGs from the bankrupt Phoenix operation.

News from MG MOTOR UK Ltd - Page 13 Empty MG stars at Autosport International Show

Post by richardk Thu Jan 10, 2013 8:43 am

    Media Release:

    January 10 2013

MG stars at Autosport International Show

MG’s new special edition MG6 GT will be one of two key models from the brand at the Autosport International Show this weekend.

Alongside the striking MG6 GT BTCC Edition at the huge event at the NEC in Birmingham will be one of the widely acclaimed new MG6 GT DTi-TECH diesel models. For many people this will be their first opportunity to see the new cars.

And you can even try your hand at ‘racing’ an MG6 as the MG Racing Bug will be at the heart of the action in Hall 19, Stand 240. There will be merchandise signed by MG’s Jason Plato and model MG cars to be won for the top drivers who take the MG Racing Bug challenge.

At the show there will be the opportunity to book test drives in the real MG6 cars as well as the opportunity to sign up to MG’s newsletter with the chance of winning a special 2013 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship weekend.

MG launched the special MG6 BTCC Edition to celebrate its hugely successful return to Britain’s favourite saloon car racing series last year. In what was supposed to be the MG KX Momentum Racing team’s ‘learning year’ MG driver Jason Plato emerged third in the championship overall.

The road-going MG6 BTCC Edition has a distinctive list of standard features including matt black roof and 18-inch alloy wheels with black gloss sills, door mirror covers, lower front air dam, rear bumper and rear spoiler. It is available in Arctic White or Union Blue paint finishes for just £16,995.

The front grille proudly sports a BTCC badge and there are distinctive MG KX Momentum Racing team colours decals on the bonnet extension, front doors and wings behind the new chrome wing vent. BTCC Edition graphics are highlighted on the sills and also inside the car on the passenger facia.

Power from the BTCC Edition is from the 1.8-litre turbo petrol engine delivering 160 PS and 0 to 62mph in 8.4 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to 120mph. Yet the car has a Group 14E insurance rating.

Standard equipment includes built-in full colour European satellite navigation (including a lifetime subscription to Trafficmaster), sports driver and front passenger seats, Dunlop Sport 225/45R 18-inch performance tyres, electronic hill hold function, power folding electrically heated exterior mirrors, iTPMS tyre monitoring system, rear parking sensors, front fog lights, cruise control, CD audio with USB and auxiliary inputs for MP3/Ipod connectivity and a leather covered multifunction steering wheel.

Despite its sporting credentials, the BTCC Special Edition is surprisingly practical for everyday use with a huge class-leading boot and rear folding seats to give a massive 1,379 litre cargo capacity.

All MG6 models have a Euro-NCAP 4-Star rating. MG6 was awarded the What Car? 2012 Security Award.

News from MG MOTOR UK Ltd - Page 13 Empty MG’s vital role in success story

Post by richardk Thu Jan 17, 2013 11:28 am

    Media release:

    January 17 2013

MG’s vital role in success story

SAIC Motor, MG’s parent company, sold a record-shattering 4.49 million vehicles in 2012.

The figure is more than double that of the entire new car market in the UK and firmly establishes SAIC Motor as the No 1 car manufacturer in China.

Last year’s total of 4.49 million sales was a 12 per cent increase on SAIC’s 2011 figures. And sitting behind the headline figure is a strong success story for MG and SMTC UK – SAIC’s European Technical Centre based at the MG Birmingham site.

Engineers and designers at SMTC work on cars within SAIC’s own brand portfolio of Roewe (China-only brand) and MG. Sales of the two brands totalled 200,000 units in 2012, a 23 per cent increase over 2011. This was the biggest percentage growth within the SAIC group’s automotive divisions.

Shanghai General Motors, SAIC’s joint venture with GM, had a 13.8 per cent growth and sold 1.39 million cars. Shanghai Volkswagen, the joint venture with VW, saw a 12 per cent increase and sold 1.28 million cars. The SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture grew by 12 per cent to 1.458 million vehicles.

During the last six years SAIC has successfully introduced and developed its own brand identity to establish Roewe and MG as class leaders in China. An independent report has shown that brand awareness in China of Roewe has grown to 93.4 per cent and MG’s has increased to 84.4 per cent.

In China Roewe 750, 550, 350 and W5 models have been successfully introduced and the MG7, MG6 and MG3 cars completed the first phase of the establishment of the brands. The second generation of Roewe and MG models was launched in 2012 with the Roewe 950 executive model and the MG5 mid-sized sporting hatchback.

    End.

    Media Release:

    January 22 2013

    MG6 on life-saving duty

A specially equipped MG6 GT is on front line life-saving duties answering emergency calls.

MG’s Sales Centre is helping FastAid volunteers in the West Midlands to respond to life-threatening incidents. FastAid is a group of highly trained Community First Responders who support West Midlands Ambulance Service by attending 999 calls in their area.

The MG6 GT has a distinctive diamond grade livery so that it can be clearly seen, even at night, travelling to the scene of an accident. Inside the car is fitted with an ambulance service radio and carries a vital automated external defibrillator which is critical to saving patients who have suffered a cardiac arrest.

Bulky equipment needed by the Community First Responders is carried in the huge boot of the MG6 GT fastback. Richard Jay, Vice Chairman of FastAid, said: “The cargo space in the MG6 is enormous and allows us to carry all of our specialist equipment with ease.”

Ashley Almquest, a FastAid volunteer, highlighted another standard feature of the MG6 GT SE which had proved extremely valuable to answering emergency calls – the built-in satellite navigation system.

He said: “The screen is so clear, the maps are really good and it’s easy to use. It can save us vital minutes when we are responding to an urgent call when someone’s life could depend on us getting to the scene quickly.”

The FastAid MG6 will mainly operate in the greater Birmingham and Solihull areas of the West Midlands where the charity was set up eight years ago. It costs up to £2,000 to train and equip each FastAid responder.

Andy Jeynes, the West Midlands Ambulance Service Community Response Manager, said: “We are extremely grateful to the MG Sales Centre for supplying the MG6. It’s already proved its worth on several call outs when the speed of response, and being able to arrive on scene with the right kit, is crucial.

“Without the support of local companies and organisations, such as the MG Sales Centre, we wouldn't be able to keep doing what we do in our local communities.”

Simon Bennett, a Sales Executive at the MG Sales Centre in Lowhill Lane, Longbridge, said: “We’re very proud that our local community first responders are saving lives in one of our cars. It’s about giving something back to the community we live in and we hope that our support helps FastAid to continue the excellent work it does.”

    Ends.

MG dealer sells ahead of opening

Hartwell, the newest MG dealer in the UK has sold cars even before it opens!

The dealership in Corporation Road, Grimsby, is hosting a festival of events today (Friday, January 25) to mark its official opening – but two MG6 Magnettes have already been sold and the proud new owners will join in the celebrations.

Dave Robertson, General Manager of Hartwell, Grimsby, said: “We opened a few weeks ago ahead of the official opening and the response has been tremendous.

“There has been a lot of genuine interest. We’ve already sold two MG6 Magnettes and one of the owners will collect their keys on Friday. It’s interesting to see just where the MG enquiries are coming from because it’s not just from MG fans; we’re getting lots of interest from people who tell us they hadn’t even considered MG before.

“The value-for-money message seems to be going down well in our area. When people realise just how well equipped the car is, suddenly they start getting serious.”

The Hartwell group is 30th on the AM100 list of Britain’s biggest retail motor businesses and the Grimsby dealership was one of eight new MG dealerships announced last year.

The MG showrooms in Corporation Road, just off the A180, has two of the recently announced MG6 GT BTTC Edition models and a new MG6 DTi-TECH diesel model alongside petrol MG6 GT and MG6 Magnette models on display.

There will also be several classic MG models on display during Friday’s events.

Colley Motors launch with MG test drive festival

One of Britain’s newest MG dealers is launching with a festival of test drives this weekend.

Colley Motors in Cwmbran, South Wales has an official opening event on Friday (February 1) followed by two days of test drives in both petrol and diesel versions of the award-winning MG6.

John Colley, who founded the business with his brother Bob, said: “We’ve sold an MG6 GT SE and have so much interest that we are booking the whole of the weekend out with test drives.

“The new MG has certainly caused a huge stir – I’ve never known a time when we’ve had so many requests for test drives. People seem particularly impressed with the value-for-money package you get with an MG6.”

Robert Jones, Colley Motors General Manager, said: “People in this part of Wales have good feelings towards the MG brand. I think the MG6 will go down very well here and it’s the kind of car that impresses you more and more as you drive it. You certainly get a lot of car for your money.”

    Media Release:

    January 31 2013

Britain’s brightest joins MG KX Momentum team

Britain’s brightest young racing driver has joined the MG KX Momentum Racing team - and has already achieved one of his lifelong ambitions.

Sam Tordoff, aged 23 has been racing since he was 10 years old and is acclaimed as Britain’s brightest racing talent. Last year he was officially recognised as the British Racing Drivers’ Club ‘Rising Star.’

He joins Jason Plato, the most successful driver in BTCC history, to contest the 2013 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.

They will both be driving racing versions of the award-winning MG6 GT prepared by Triple 888 Race Engineering, one of the most respected constructors in touring car racing.

Last year Plato was third in the championship in what was supposed to be the team’s ‘learning year’ as MG returned to the track.

Tordoff, who hails from Leeds, began racing karts as a boy and worked his way up motorsport ladder via the Renault Clio Cup and the Porsche Carrera Cup with many wins and podiums under his belt. He also competed in one round of BTCC racing in 2010 on the Brands hatch Indy circuit.

Last year Tordoff, who has a B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering and works as a trainee accountant with the JCT600 motor group, won a place at the KX Akademy for the 2013 season. The bursary programme was set up by KX Energy Drink where Jason Plato is the scheme’s mentor.

He said: “I’m thrilled to be joining Jason, Ian and the rest of the team and I’m determined to do well – even if it means beating Jason!”

Jason said: “Sam’s a great young talent and brings a lot to our team. He’s a fast learner and it will be great to see him alongside me on the podium – but I’m planning to be on the top step.”

Ian Harrison has the task of managing the MG KX Momentum team. He added: “We’ve got a great team for the 2013 season in Jason and Sam.

“Jason’s obviously got the experience, including a fabulous year with the MG6 GT last year, and Sam’s out to prove himself now he’s won a seat in a top team. It’s going to be a great year of racing.”

MG’s Sales & marketing Director, Guy Jones, said: “It was brilliant for us to get MG back on the track last year and the cars were seen by millions of fans. Motor sport is in the DNA of the MG brand and we can’t wait for the 2013 BTCC to get under way.”

News from MG MOTOR UK Ltd - Page 13 Empty MG at British Shooting and Countryman Show

Post by richardk Tue Feb 05, 2013 9:21 am

    Media Release:

    February 5 2013

MG at British Shooting and Countryman Show

MG has joined forces with Birmingham-based BSA Guns and will be showing a range of its latest cars at the British Shooting and Countryman Show this weekend.

A special black MG6 GT carrying the livery of BSA will be the centrepiece of a four car display in Stoneleigh Park, Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, on Saturday and Sunday.

Two more MG6 GT DTi-TECH diesel models, which are the latest models to be added to the MG range, will also be on view along with a stunning MG6 GT BTCC Edition, a model launched to celebrate MG’s successful return to British Touring Car Championship racing.

The DTi-TECH diesel-powered MG6 GT is the second major development in the modern MG story and is powered by a 1.9-litre turbo unit - the first diesel engine from MG’s parent company, SAIC Motor.

Design and engineering development of the new MG6 DTi-TECH diesel, like the petrol versions, was carried out at the MG Birmingham site, home of SAIC’s European Design and Technical Centres. Final assembly also takes place at the Birmingham factory.

The new 1.9-litre DTi-TECH variable rate turbocharged diesel engine delivers 150PS. That gives an impressive 0-62mph time of just 8.9 seconds and a maximum speed of 120mph.

The DTi-TECH diesel really stands out by offering the highest pulling power (350Nm of torque) with the lowest insurance group (14E and 15E) in the market.

Prices for MG6 DTi-TECH diesels start from £16,995. Petrol versions start from £15,455. Generous £3,000 minimum trade-in allowances can be made on MG6 petrol models.

The special MG6 BTCC Edition celebrates MG’s hugely successful return to Britain’s favourite saloon car racing series. Jason Plato clinched an amazing third place in the championship last year after taking the chequered flag six times in the season.

The road-going MG6 BTCC Edition is on sale with a distinctive list of standard features including matt black roof and 18-inch alloy wheels with black gloss sills, door mirror covers, lower front air dam, rear bumper and rear spoiler and the choice of Arctic White or Union Blue paint finishes for just £16,995.

The British Shooting and Countryman Show is claimed to be the biggest event of its kind in Europe and this year moved to Stoneleigh having outgrown its previous home in Newark. Thousands of people are expected to attend over the weekend.

BSA Guns UK is based in Small Heath, Birmingham and the firm can trace its history back to 1861. The company will be one of the key exhibitors at the Stoneleigh show.

Simon Moore, BSA’s Managing Director said; “This is a fantastic partnership between MG and BSA Guns. Being two iconic British brands, both of which have long and established engineering and manufacturing relationship with Birmingham, it’s great to be working together.

“As a former Apprentice Engineer at Longbridge it’s a wonderful opportunity to unite these two great brands, both of whom I am privileged to be associated with.”

Dave Clark, a Sales Executive at the MG Sales Centre in Lowhill lane, Longbridge, Birmingham, said: “If you are an outdoors, sporty type and need to carry lots of kit, the MG6 could be just the kind of car you’re looking for. It’s got the biggest boot space in its class but also has a large, comfortable cabin area for five adults.”

    MG launches two wheeled team

MG is launching a pro-cycling team which includes some of Britain’s top racing cyclists.

The MG Maxifuel Pro Cycling Team will compete in nearly 100 of the UK’s top events this year, many of which will be screened on TV, in what is Britain’s fastest growing sport.

And to mark the team’s launch they are taking part in a huge event at MG’s home in Birmingham next Tuesday (March 12) to raise money for Comic Relief.

A squad of 20 riders make up the men’s and women’s MG Maxifuel Pro Cycling teams, including Hannah Barnes, a 21times national champion at various events and Sweden’s Magnus Backstedt, a Tour de France stage winner.

Other key members include Charline Joiner, a double Commonwealth games silver medallist; Will Bjergfelt, who has represented GB in the world cycling championships; Toni Abbisogni, an Australian national medallist; Melissa Brand, who is ranked 3rd in Europe at triathlon and David Lines who rode in the Delhi Commonwealth Games and helped the team take multiple cycling medals.

The team, whose ages range from 18 to 40, will compete in races ranging from 200 meter track sprints to 200km road races. They will be mounted on bikes weighing just 6.8 kilos and worth several thousand pounds each.

Next Tuesday the team will be officially announced at an event at the MG Sales Centre at the MG Birmingham site in Lowhill Lane, Longbridge, Birmingham.

Members of the team will then put on red noses and ride seven miles into Birmingham City Centre in a convoy supported by MG6 cars to raise money for Comic Relief.

Throughout the afternoon members of the team will be at several venues in Birmingham city centre raising money for Comic Relief, including riding against MG Benji – the MG Car Club’s mascot.

MG is also promoting healthy living and promoting cycling as a successful British Olympic legacy sport.

Clint Cordle, MG’s Head of Marketing and PR, said: “Cycling is now the fastest growing sport in the UK and it’s great that MG can be involved in a high-profile sport which also has tens of thousands of fans at grass root level.

“The team has two MG6 GTs as support cars and they are delighted with them. The huge boot easily swallows all the kit the team needs and the bright logos on the cars mean they will be easily spotted by fans up and down the country.”

Rod Freeman, MG Maxifuel Pro Cycling Team Manager, said: “With MG’s support I think this team will be really strong in 2013 and we are delighted that MG has given us their support.”

MG takes to two wheels for Comic Relief

MG took the opportunity to help raise money for Comic Relief with the help of its new pro-cycling team.

The MG Maxifuel Pro Cycling Team put on red noses in a seven mile charity ride from the MG Birmingham site to Birmingham city centre following the formal launch of the team.

Most of the team took part in the ride on Tuesday, braving the bitter cold. In fact, some of the team doubted if their Comic Relief red noses were really necessary as the biting wind seemed to be putting plenty of colour in their faces anyway!

A squad of 20 riders make up the men’s and women’s MG Maxifuel Pro Cycling teams, including Hannah Barnes, a 21times national champion at various events and Sweden’s Magnus Backstedt, a Tour de France stage winner.

Other key members include Charline Joiner, a Commonwealth games silver medallist; Will Bjergfelt, who has represented GB in the world cycling championships; Toni Abbisogni, an Australian national medallist; Melissa Brand, who is ranked 3rd in Europe at triathlon and David Lines who rode in the Delhi Commonwealth Games and helped the team take multiple cycling medals.

The team riders in their bright red and blue kit made quite a sight as the made their way along the A38 with their MG6 GT support cars which the team will use at around 100 top cycling events this year.

In Victoria Square, outside Birmingham’s Council House, the team took on the MG Racing Bug challenge, attempting to steer model MG6 cars around a track.

MG Benji, the MG Car Club’s mascot, put in an appearance and added to the charity fundraising. MG is still counting the money raised, but it is hoped that several hundred pounds will have been raised by Friday for Comic Relief.

    Media Release:

    March 22 2013

MG6 DTi-TECH has proved it’s the perfect towing partner

German autobahns, the Spanish Pyrenees and tens of thousands of
miles of British roadways are part of the incredible story which has made
the new MG6 DTi-TECH diesel the perfect towing partner.

The MG6 GT and MG6 Magnette diesels can now add a maximum
towing weight of 1,600kg to their long list of attributes. The news means
that the latest MGs will appeal to thousands of Britain’s caravanners and
    trailer towers.

But behind the cold maximum towing weight statistic is an international
engineering story involving hundreds of hours of computer testing and
thousands of miles of shake down tests to near destruction limits.

After an intensive year-long development programme by engineers at
SAIC Motor’s European Technical Centre at the MG Birmingham site
(known as SMTC UK), the MG6 DTi-TECH has emerged with flying
    colours.

Kevin Fisher, a Body-In-White engineer, said: “You can’t just bolt a tow
bar on a car. Most people probably have no idea just how much work
has to go into making sure it works properly and safely with the car.

“Many of hours were spent on computer modelling before we even put
a car and dyno test rig on the road. Then we subjected the car to a
massive range of the toughest testing you could think of – far more than
any owner would ever do in real life.”

High speed swerve manoeuvres, flat out acceleration sprints and
emergency brake tests inflicted maximum stress loads on the MG6 DTi-
TECH chassis during proving ground testing with a caravan. Repeated
stationary hill starts with five adult passengers, a fully loaded boot and
a maximum weight 1,600kg trailer on a severe 12% steep ‘torture hill’,
inflicted enormous pressure on the car’s clutch and drive train.

Huge weights and pressures were brought down on the tow bar and rear
of the car in a series of vertical, transverse and longitudinal tests with up
to 60,000 repetitions to replicate the MG6 driving on some of the worst
    road surfaces in the world.

Hot climate testing was carried out on the twisting roads of the Spanish
Pyrenees with the MG6 DTi-TECH towing a 1,600kg dyno trailer
followed by hundreds of miles of fast autobahn driving in Germany.

Finally MG6 DTi-TECH cars spent 10,000 miles carrying out towing
durability tests with loaded trailers across a mixture of British motorways,
A-class roads and pot-holed country lanes.

Almost every engineering discipline within SMTC UK, including body-
in-white, power train, electrical, cooling and calibration specialists, were
involved in the development of the MG6 DTi-TECH for towing. Experts
from Witter, the UK’s leading tow bar manufacturer, were also involved
    in the vast testing programme.

Kevin Fisher said: “The MG6 DTi-TECH is now the perfect partner for
towing. It’s got real pulling power and far more muscle than many people
might imagine – our testing programme has proved that.”

The MG6 DTi-TECH models are powered by 1.9-litre turbo diesel units.
They have common rail direct injection and a variable-rate turbocharger
which means that they have the latest engine technology. And unique to
the diesel versions are Stop-Start technology, which improves economy
by a further 5%, and Smart Charging. This is a system which saves
energy by only supplying power to certain electrical components when it
    is actually needed.

The new 1.9-litre DTi-TECH variable rate turbocharged diesel engine
delivers 150PS. That gives an impressive 0-62mph time of just 8.9
seconds and a maximum speed of 120mph.

The DTi-TECH diesel really stands out by offering the highest pulling
power (350Nm of torque) with the lowest insurance group (14E and 15E)
in the market. Prices for MG6 DTi-TECH diesels start from £16,995.

So can it reach the 120mph speed limiter on the German Autobahn with a two tonne load? Twisted Evil

Post by patpending Wed Jun 12, 2013 12:33 pm

    Media Release:

MG INCREASE INVESTING IN BRITISH DESIGN

Today (June 12) SAIC Motor’s European Design Centre at the MG Birmingham site was opened. It has more than doubled in size just three years after the original design studio opened.

The latest investment from SAIC Motor, MG’s parent company, follows on from more than £500 million invested in the development of new models for Europe.

Staff in the newly expanded Design Centre are already working on a range of future MG models, including the new MG3. The latest investment allows the studio, now the fifth largest in Britain, to carry out even more advanced design work. The original studio was part of a £5 million investment programme.

An advanced five-axis milling machine, which allows models in clay or hard materials to be produced within 36 hours, is a major part of the latest upgrade and spending on sophisticated equipment. It also includes a Visualisation Suite where life-size images of models can be projected onto a giant screen that has 2D and 3D capability.

A second design plate, an extremely accurate steel plate set to fine tolerances, has been installed. This allows highly-skilled clay modellers to work on future generations of MG cars.

More than 160 designers at two studios – Shanghai and the MG site in Birmingham – come under the leadership of Anthony Williams-Kenny, SAIC’s Head of Global Design who flew in from China for the opening. Canadian-born Martin Uhlarik heads the European Design Centre in Birmingham.

The designers work closely with the 300 professional engineers at the adjoining SAIC UK Technical Centre. More than 400 people are employed at the MG Birmingham site where the new MG3 will roll off the assembly line later this year.
It will become the second modern MG to come out of the Birmingham factory following the MG6 GT fastback and Magnette sport saloon range of petrol and diesel models.

News from MG MOTOR UK Ltd - Page 13 Empty EUROPEAN MG3 SHOWCASES BRITISH DESIGN FLAIR

Post by patpending Wed Jun 12, 2013 12:39 pm

    Media Release:

    June 12 2013

EUROPEAN MG3 SHOWCASES BRITISH DESIGN FLAIR

Today (June 12) MG unveiled the full range of styles for the UK MG3 at its Birmingham-based European Design Centre.
The exciting new car carries forward many of the styling cues first illustrated on the MG ZERO concept car, again designed here at SAIC Motors European Design Centre. SAIC, MG’s parent company, is the eight largest automotive company in the world and China’s No1 auto firm.
The UK studio has just undergone an additional investment and is now more than double its original size. It opened just three years ago in what was then a £5 million capital programme. It’s now the fifth largest automotive design studio in Britain.
MG3 is a distinctive statement of modern British style designed to target young and style conscious buyers, wanting something that’s different from anything else in the market.
From launch, MG3 customers will be able to personalise both the exterior and interior of this new supermini MG, making it fun to buy and own, as well as having the MG trademark of being fun to drive.
The MG3 is all about style, fun and offering customers the ability to personalize the car. With three trim levels, 10 colours and a range of at least 10 graphic packs, they will be spoilt for choice! The combinations are almost endless.
Depending on the model choice, exterior highlights include 16” Diamond cut alloy wheels, unique LED ‘hockey stick’ daytime running lights, sport-design bumper, side sill extensions, rear spoiler, sports-design rear valance, chrome exhaust finishers and MG insert headlamps.

Inside the MG3, again depending on trim level and options, key features will be  an easy to use air conditioning system, six-speaker audio, Bluetooth with audio streaming, DAB radio, USB/Aux input, automatic lights, automatic wipers, rear parking sensors, ‘ZERO’ design fabric seats and part-leather trim.
This unique and contemporary style of the MG3 is the work of the 30 design staff and 300 engineers at SAIC’s UK Technical Centre here at the MG Birmingham site in Longbridge, UK.
The MG3 will become the second in a new generation of MG vehicles to leave the assembly line at the Birmingham factory, following the introduction of the MG6 petrol and diesel range of GT fastbacks and Magnette four-door sports saloons.
    British Style fun
MG’s UK based design team have given the new MG3 a cheeky touch of flair from every viewing angle.
From the front there is an immediate, distinctive flash of style with the ‘hockey stick’ LED daytime running lights on every trim level, a full width black mesh grille, and black A-Pillar and ‘visor’ wraparound style windscreen. It will make the MG3 unmistakable on the road.
Equally distinctive is the side profiIe. The dual colour side skirts clearly echo the design of the MG ZERO, lowering the stance of the car and hinting at just how much fun the MG3 could be to own. Diamond-cut, dual colour wheels give a real touch of class on the higher trim levels.
From the rear there is a strong pointer to the fun and sportiness that lies at the heart of the MG brand. With a rear valance insert inspired by generations of MG racing cars, a unique superelliptic tail pipe finished in chrome and a body coloured tail spoiler, the MG3  looks distinctly sleek and sporty – a designer’s dream.

    SPACE FOR FUN
Normally this is where the compromise comes on small sporty cars – but not with MG3. Fun, entertaining and easy to live with, the MG3 combines style and enjoyment with practical spaciousness. The designers and engineers have combined to create an exceptional amount of space and versatility in a very compact five-door package.
Extensive work from the MG Design and Engineering team on the architectural package has resulted in interior packaging that rivals or surpasses anything in its class. In a 4m long package, the MG3 will easily accommodate four 6ft individuals; a level of accommodation typically associated with larger cars and mirrors the spaciousness of the MG6 range.
The MG3’s ‘rolled and raised’ front dashboard design creates an airy forward cabin space and increased legroom, while allowing excellent access to primary and secondary controls. This theme is continued in the rear of the car, where the front seats are sculpted to allow rear passengers excellent space to travel in comfort.
Class-leading rear headroom is another characteristic which sets the MG3 apart. Many cars in this sector compromise on interior space, particularly in the rear. But rear headroom in the MG3 is more than generous.
So clearly space and comfort have not been compromised in this, the first modern supermini from MG to take the famous octagon brand into a new sector.
    FUN TO DRIVE
Designed with the core value of fun to drive, the MG3 chassis has been honed from hundreds of thousands of miles of testing on European roads.  Intended to deliver impressive levels of body control, sharpness and a willingness to corner to engage keen drivers, MG’s world class team of chassis engineers have also delivered sure footed handling and impressive ride comfort. Together this makes the MG3 suitable for every journey, from crowded urban routes, to flowing British B-roads or cruising on a European motorway.

    MAKE IT YOUR OWN
In addition to a wide range of body colours a range of personalisation options will be available, allowing the MG3 to be tailored to the individual behind the wheel. Roof, side and bonnet graphics will allow owners to personalise their own MG3. Interior trims, wheels, vents, surrounds and mats will all be available in a choice of designs, colours and finishes allowing you to make your MG3 truly personal.
MG3 – WELCOME TO THE MG  FAMILY
Our new baby will be powered by a healthy 105PS version of our own VTi-TECH petrol engine, joining the MG6 DTi-TECH and TCi-TECH engines in the European family. The dynamic and responsive VTi-TECH engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission that makes the MG3 perfectly suited to nipping in and out of city traffic or enjoying a great British B road.
Guy Jones, MG Motor UK’s Sales & Marketing Director said: “This new MG3 is a great package for the increasing number of European customers looking for a stylish small car, that’s affordable and practical to own.
“It’s got a distinctive, cheeky style and will be fun to buy, own and drive, yet still affordable for a wide range of people. It’s the modern interpretation of a small fun MG and shows how we will take the essence of this iconic brand into the future.”
At just 4-meters long and with five doors, MG3 is really easy to drive and park and very practical. It has a distinctive stance and the ‘hockey stick’ daylight running lights help give the MG3 a front ‘face’ unlike any other car.
Jones added: “The reaction to the MG3 has been extremely positive from both male and female customers and it will also mean that MG dealers in Britain will soon have a second all-new model in the showrooms.
“This is a car that that MG enthusiasts and dealers across Europe have been waiting for, but more significantly it will bring a whole new group of customers to the MG brand for the first time.

“Sitting alongside the MG6 models it strengthens our range and will give us an even bigger target audience. Nowadays the possibility to stamp your own personal style on a car is widely appealing and the MG3 offers just that prospect.”

    ADDITIONAL
Full specifications and prices will be announced nearer to the public launch over MG3.

News from MG MOTOR UK Ltd - Page 13 Empty MG KXMomentum - Croft preview

    Press release:

    June 19, 2013
HOMECOMING HEROES PLATO AND TORDOFF READY FOR CROFT SHOWDOWN

Jason Plato and Sam Tordoff say they are aiming to put on a show for his home fans at the wheel of their MG KX Momentum MG6s during the British Touring Car Championship rounds at Croft in North Yorkshire this weekend.
Former champion Plato, and his impressive rookie team-mate Sam Tordoff, head to the fifth meeting of the season and it will give Newcastle-born Plato a chance to perform in front of his home crowd.
It will be an important weekend for Plato’s team-mate Tordoff too, because he will be racing at his local circuit as well. It will be the first time he has handled a BTCC car in front of friends and family.
Plato, who has won four races this season, explained: “This is as close as it gets to racing at home for me, and that is a special feeling. What is also special is the track itself; Croft has a little bit of everything – there are really technical bits and there are some very fast sweeps out the back that require a huge amount of bravery.”
As well as the challenging nature of the circuit, Plato says that improvements made to his MG over the recent race weekends will reap rewards on the 2.25-mile layout.
“We showed at the last rounds at Oulton Park that the tweaks we have made to the chassis are paying off,” said Plato. “We had a great handling car on a very demanding circuit and those are the strengths we are going to need at Croft as well. We need to keep the momentum going that we have built up.”
For Tordoff, Croft will be another step into the unknown as he has yet to race a British Touring Car Championship machine there, but the Leeds ace has taken all the challenges in his stride so far. He took a career-best second place last time out at Oulton Park and has reset his targets for the remaining 18 races this year.
The 24-year-old, a member of the KX Akademy scheme to promote young talent, said: “I don’t think that wins are out of the question given how we performed at Oulton Park. What is great is that we have got on top of how to use the Dunlop tyres and get the most from them, which will be vital at Croft.
“We are confident enough to think that both Jason and I can fend off the threats from any team at Croft, and that means you go into the meeting with your sights set high.”
And Tordoff says that his target for this weekend’s meeting will be to try and improve on his incredible fifth in the points’ table. “Although it is my first year at this level, I am not asking for any special treatment,” he said. “I am out there to win as much as the next man, I have a great platform in the MG KX Momentum MG and I plan to use it as best as I can.”
Team principal Ian Harrison says he wants the MG KX Momentum squad to continue its race-winning form from Oulton Park at Croft, and he said that his hopes were high.
“We were fast at Croft last season so that is a positive thing, and we have a great car for both drivers. We got our first one-two of the season last time out at Oulton Park and we would love to do that again this weekend.
“The weather forecast for Sunday is changeable so that might make it tough for us, but that will be the same for everyone,” added Harrison. “We need to push on and make sure both drivers keep landing solid finishes.”
