We were expecting a hatchback and a saloon to follow sometime later, but this is described as "A Sports Car of the Fastback design" with headlamps of irregular polygon style reflecting the DNA of passion

I love it! Will it be called a Concept when it goes on display at the Shanghai Motor Show, do you think? Pukou first for production, then Longbridge later? Rolling Eyes

No, should be the real thing at the Shanghai Motor Show, in hatchback form to go on sale in China later this year and in UK early next year, a saloon should follow sometime later. Although at the moment the stories are all a bit mixed up due to being all based on rumours rather than press releases!

The production line for the MG 6 will be shared with the Roewe 550 and is located at SAIC's new Shanghai Port base, I don't think they will go anywhere near Pukou. For UK production bodyshells will be loaded onto ships for assembly at Longbridge - having the base located at the port has advantages!.

When we do see the real thing, remember that a UK version may be a little different in the same way that the TF LE500 has a different grill to the Chinese TF.

    Welcome

It's hard to say how radical it will be in the flesh but it looks quite radical for an MG! It's quite SD1 esque

I'm as, if not more, interested in the interior and the ride..as much as the externals

Not long until we can see it in the flesh now

    Welcome Lee,

I think the front is based on SAIC's W2 from the previous show rather than a Vaxhall, I hope they don't put the Vauxhall chrome bits on! The W2 didn't remind of a Vaxhall.

The sides need to look like a Roewe 550 so they can share a production line, it can't be too radical!

MG 6 Fastback Coupe - Global Launch at Shanghai Auto

At the 13th Shanghai International Auto Show, Shanghai Automotive will shock the world, giving us the new 21st century definition of a Coupe. Based on the W261 integrated platform the MG6 Fastback Coupe will rewrite the definition of aesthetics.

The introduction of SAIC Motors first global car, the MG 6, will also will be a declaration of the experience of 12 months after the integration of Nanjing Automobile Coorporation and will formally open the "MG 85th anniversary of the brand" activities and celebrations and start the global revival of the brand.

The FastBack design aesthetic most prominent feature is continuity of flow in the rear roof line and has been used in the up-market race car design trends of the 21st century, in cars such as the BMW 645Ci, Ferrari 621 Scagletti, Bentley Continental GT, Benz CLS ... the "Fastback" is the trend.

    woo! a Fastback Coupé!

I think of ideas people had for a Rover 75 coupé and back to the 800 hatch...when was the last 2- or 3-door MG saloon? (The Metro was a lot smaller - how many doors did the 1100 have?)

This will surely get people talking! in the credit crunch, people are interested in flashy cars in a way they are not interested in family saloons!

And don't forget it will re-write the definition of "aesthetics"!

    Old: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/aesthetics

    aes⋅thet⋅ics

    1.

the branch of philosophy dealing with such notions as the beautiful, the
ugly, the sublime, the comic, etc., as applicable to the fine arts,
with a view to establishing the meaning and validity of critical
judgments concerning works of art, and the principles underlying or
    justifying such judgments.

    2. the study of the mind and emotions in relation to the sense of beauty.

I think being too small to even be able to count the doors accurately was the idea behind that teaser image! I don't think you will find a larger one than the one here unless it's a fuzzy enlargement Laughing

Then again, www.chinacartimes.com does have some larger ones, and although they do appear to have been enlarged as you can see the pixels, you can count the doors:

I can see some similarities between these concept sketches and those murky Chinese shots from months back. Different grille, but the little wing vents look the same.

    Exactly!

Now I've seen the higher res photo's I'm a lot more enthusiastic... It's a lot more angular than it looked in the first set of pictures... there's touches of Audi, Jaguar, dare I say BMW? silent and even a little of the Rover TCV concept in there! Best of all they've managed to take all of these design cues and turn them into a good-looking, unique product in it's own right. This can only be a good thing, in order to tempt in new & old buyers alike.

I'm pleased they haven't tried to hold onto MG / Rover design cues from the past ( headlights on 550 )... hopefully the future is just around the corner! Cool

If it were on sale in the UK tomorrow, I'd part-ex my 75 without much thought...! bounce

It's been an awfully long wait... I really hope it does well!

I'm hopeing that it turns out more like the car in the clouds image, that is clearly the same car but appears less angular and has a better connection to past MGs.

sounds like the insistence that the 75 is spelt 75 but pronounced Seventy-five in all markets.

Mind you, since you wrote out SIX, it's just struck me what the BL ancestor is to the MG6...
