well, don't look at me. I was thinking a "laptoppyphone" was a sort of crocheted phone cosy for a GPO 746 a bit like this...

In the past, I have seen ideas the cars should have computers that would communicate with each other to set up networks and avoid accidents. I think this it...

Who's that lucky chap with the fair hair and big smile, being led away by a lovely lady? Could he be one of the designers now based at Longbridge? A friend/colleague of the chap who looks like Brian Eno?

But perhaps more importantly, we don't know what the interior of the MG6 looks like yet. Based on the R550, no doubt, but will it be mostly the same, or will it be styled differently (like the MG Zeds were compared to the Rovers)?

    We need pics!

of course Brian Eno (aerodynamic guru for successful F1 team Red Bull in a China Shop) claimed not to be in Shanghai this weekend. If only I knew what the locals think is not really in Shanghai - was he on Edward VII Avenue on the "Bund"? So perhaps that is Brian Eno in a wig. Perhaps he gets his hair done at Ricardo's. Wink

As for the bloke with the dancer, that's surely Ham-Mond Richu of Chinese car show Top Geely. Laughing Again, the dancer does draw our eye from the top brass and the car - where are the famous MG Red Arrows when you need them? :slap: Laughing

Looking for any announcement about MGs in Longbridge, I found this blog by John Neff - overall rather positive for an outsider! (even if it says "future MGs can be good because they'll be based on Roewes") Wink

    There's a whole gallery here ...

This explains the chequered pattern outside the driver's door...

and guess which dancer I fancy? I think the dancer in the blue and black just took the only photo we have of the interior! Top lady! If she loves MGs that much I don't care what her knees are like! Laughing

    ( I think the image has been cropped. It's here: http://www.blogcdn.com/cn.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/img_8746.jpg )

Here's another of my top MG crumpet:

well, I'm a trusting person, but I could so nearly have paid over a big deposit to MG Rover Direct just before they went bust! Doh (SAIC are really strong, but just look at Ford or GM!)

I can't imagine buying on-line from the manufacturer is a tremendously satisfying experience - no test drive, no looking at the car beforehand and, if you think haggling with an Indian call centre would be difficult, just imagine haggling with a computer! In Chinese! Doh

The Shanghai Auto Industry Corporation (SAIC) has unveiled the production version of its Roewe 550 bases MG6 at the Shanghai Auto Show.
To be sold under the MG brand in Europe, the MG6 will be the first new MG launched in the UK since the ZS and ZT models, way back in 2001.
A sedan variant will also make its way to Europe, based on the Chinese market Roewe 550, with sales expected to begin in early 2010.
While detailed specifications aren’t available just yet, it’s understood that a 1.8 litre four-cylinder turbo engine will be available.
The Rover K-Series engine has been around for a while now and has in the past produced as much as 142kW (192hp). This is expected to be the most popular engine choice.
Final homologation testing is currently being undertaken to clear the MG6 for sale in Europe.
A new range of smaller cars is also said to be in the works, with SAIC looking to fill the gaps in the MG and Roewe lineups.
Chinese markets would receive the Roewe 350, while the same car would be sold as the MG5 elsewhere.
There is also talk of an updated MG TF roadster, but we’ll bring you more information on that as it comes to light.
192bhp? Have they got that right?

Well as a Rover it didn't, and if it had it would have fallen apart as just about every part was not strong enough to cope with the torque, however the new 1.5T is producing more than the 1.8T used to so it is feasible that there is a new version of the 1.8T that does produce 192.

As far as I can remember,

There is an N-Series line at Pukou (Nanjing) producing 1.4, 1.8 and 1.8T.
There is a K-Series 1.8T and 1.8DVVT line at Lingang (Shanghai Port).
There is a KV6 2.5 line at Lingang.
Pukou has the ability to produce NV6 too, but I don't know if they still do.
The new lines for the new smaller NSE engines, including the 1.5T are being built at Pukou with first engines due this summer and production scheduled for end of February next year.

The 192bhp might be referring to the K2000 which was only used in motorsport.

I doubt we'll see that in a road car.

The New MG 6 Fastback Coupe - Page 3 Empty Roewe N1 will become an MG

    from: http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/239683/
The Roewe N1 concept, one of the smartest-looking offerings at the Shanghai show, will be badged Roewe 350 when it reaches production, and could spawn a sporty MG version.
The car, which is earmarked for sale in both Europe and North America, has been developed on an all-new platform that will also underpin a more overtly sporty MG model, which is set to wear the name MG4.
Powering the production version of the N1 will be a range of existing four-cylinder engines – essentially updated versions of the old Rover K-series powerplant purchased by parent company SAIC including 1.1, 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol units.
SAIC is also negotiating with potential partners, including General Motors and Volkswagen, on a diesel engine supply deal. Rumours around Shanghai suggested the N1 could receive Volkswagen’s new 89bhp 1.6-litre four-cylinder common-rail diesel engine.

when the cc of engines is going down all the time and power is going up, it's interesting to see what a diesel can produce. Thirty years ago, 85bhp from a 1.6 VW petrol engine was pretty dang sporty! Wink

    Times change!

Don't know where they will get the 1.1, 1.4 and 1.6 engines from when the factory is setting up to produce 1.5 Litre engines and in the interview with Jiang Jun, he said that a 1.4 wasn't necessary when they have a 1.5 - I think the contents of that report, including the name "MG4" are rather suspect!
